A rash of positive tests under the NFL's steroid policy is threatening to engulf three Saints players, including Smith. On Saturday, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that both unnamed NFL and NFL Union officials had confirmed that eight players had tested positive under the policy, including Smith. Mortensen's sources related that at least four of the eight players have tested positive for a substance called Bumetanide, a diuretic that under the NFL's steroid testing policy results in a positive test because it has properties that can mask use of performance-enhancing drugs. The reports first surfaced on Friday out of Denver. The NFL, the Saints and Smith have had no comment since the report broke. If the information is accurate and Smith is found to have tested positive, it would result in a four-game suspension, which he could appeal. Worse is that two other Saints -- DE Charles Grant and RB Deuce McAllister -- have also been named in the report.
