Welch was a surprise addition to the 2004 recruiting class as he was a relative unknown prior to the 2003 spring evaluation period, but once his highlight tape circulated, offers came pouring in from around the Big Ten. Once Ohio State offered, Welch decided to make an early commitment. He's a hard-hitting playmaker who will make receivers pay. He had eight interceptions for 182 yards in 2003 while helping his school to a playoff berth.
