| Though he‘s one of the Vols’ finest all-around athletes, Gaither may not crack the starting lineup because of Tennessee’s superior talent at the three linebacker positions. He’s currently listed second team at strongside ‘backer behind Jason Mitchell. Gaither is so quick that he got some work at strong safety in the spring and could see spot duty there this fall. 2003: Recorded 23 total tackles, including three stops for loss. Had a five-tackle game at Auburn and led UT with 10 special-teams tackles. 2002: Played in all 13 games, recording 17 tackles. Twelve of these came on special teams, leading the team in that category. HIGH SCHOOL: A PrepStar All-American selection who ranked as the No. 7 linebacker in the Atlantic region. Starred in three sports for Myers Park High School. A four-year starter in football, Gaither made 41 consecutive starts. As a senior he gained 841 yards rushing and scored eight touchdowns on only 91 carries. At outside linebacker, he recorded 94 tackles, intercepted three passes returning one 77 yards for a touchdown. He also had 31/2 sacks, caused five fumbles, made eight tackles behind the line of scrimmage and blocked two kicks. He returned another interception 83 yards for a score that was negated by a penalty. Gaither carries a perfect 4.0 grade point average while maintaining a full load of college prep courses and he was named the Defensive Player of the Game for his outstanding performance in the Carolina Shrine All-Star Game. Gaither, who has 4.6 speed and a 36-inch vertical leap, averages a double-double in scoring and rebounding for the Myers Park basketball team and is a standout in the triple jump and relays. Also received All-America honors from Tom Lemming and Borderwars.com. Tom Lemming lists him as the nation's No. 14 linebacker prospect.
