Woodland Hills roster was bolstered by the pre-season transfers of Lamar Mason (Pittsburgh Central Catholic) and Rob Gronkowski (Williamsville, N.Y.). The Gators of Gateway are a young team this year and the Wolverines were picked by some as a potential contender for a state championship. The game on Friday night also featured two of the WPIAL's top coaches. For Wood land Hills you have a living legend in George Novak and for Gateway you have one of the state's brightest young stars in former Penn State wide receiver Terry Smith.
Gateway twice drove inside the Wolverines five-yard line, but came up short as the Wolverines piled up 290 yards on the ground and pulled out a 21-0 victory at Pete Antimarino stadium in front of a packed house.
The Wolverines were led by the RB-QB tandem of Marcel Farrish and Vondre Griffin. Farrish ran for 100 yards a two touchdowns and Griffin added 134 yards and one score. The Wolverines were aided by five Gator turnovers including three interceptions and two fumbles. Senior safety Rontez Miles led the way with two picks. Brandon Watters picked off another pass and returned it 100-yards for a touchdown, but it was negated by a penalty.
The lone bright spot once again for the Gators was talented junior Cameron Saddler as he ran for 133 yards on the evening.
