Valley star Toney Clemons only touched the ball a handful of times during the game, but the Scout.com four-star prospect still made his presence known. Clemons had a crushing block that sprang running back Darwin Banks on a big run that helped lead to the Vikings lone score. He also had a few spine tingling hits on defense including a touchdown saving tackle of Dan Rooney.
On that play, Clemons forced Shadyside to try a field goal attempt after Rooney was forced to leave the game with an apparent shoulder injury.
"I love playing defense," Clemons said. "I'll be playing offense the rest of my life."
The night was special for the family of the NFL's first african-american QB Willie Thrower as a statue of the former Valley star was unveiled. Thrower starred at Michigan State and then with the Chicago Bears in the 1950's. Thrower also played in the Canadian Football League before a seperated shoulder forced him to retire at the age of 27. Thrower led the Spartans to a national championship in 1952.
