When Dayton Dunbar lost to Indianapolis Lawrence North in a high school showdown in early December, Daequan Cook may have hoped for a friendly rematch against his high school pals.
On Wednesday night, he got one.
A furious 15-0 run by the West team in the McDonald’s All-American game in San Diego on Wednesday turned a 4-point deficit with 9 minutes to play into an 87-76 lead over the East, with Lawrence North stars Greg Oden and Mike Conley. The West held on to the win 112-94 aided by 17 points from Cook.
Early in the game, it didn’t appear Cook would be quite as fortunate. The East jumped out to a 20-point lead, 44-24 in the first 14 minutes largely because of some offensive fireworks by 6-4 Gerald Henderson and 6-4 guard Javaris Crittenton, who will be attending Duke and Georgia Tech next season.
But while Henderson scored 8 of the East’s first 20 points, Oden made a bigger splash. The 7-footer, who will attend Ohio State along with Conley and Cook, blocked four shots in the game’s first 5 minutes to intimidate any West player that tried driving into the paint.
Late in the first half, however, the 7-0 center re-aggravated a sprained wrist he suffered early in the week on an alley-oop pass from Thaddeus Young.
With Oden off the floor, the West climbed to within a 55-48 halftime deficit.
The West picked up in the second half where they left off. A 10-2 run to start the half was capped off by a Cook 3-pointer which gave them a 58-57 lead, the first of the game.
With Oden back in the game and on the court, however, the East was able to get back the lead. They worked their way out to a 76-72 lead when Oden went back to the bench.
That’s when the East lost their grip for the final time.
Sherron Collins was fouled in the act of a 3-pointer from deep in the corner. After making the first to free throws to cut the lead to 76-74, the third free throw was missed and co-MVP Kevin Durant grabbed the rebound and went back up for a shot. He was fouled.
He made the first free throw but missed the second leaving the West down by a point. However, Durant again grabbed the rebound and scored on the putback while drawing a third foul on the East in one possession. He sank the free throw giving the West a 78-76 lead, propelling the 15-0 run.
Durant finished with 25 points, five rebounds and four assists in just 19 minutes of action. The other co-MVP, Chase Buddinger, had 11 points and four assists for the West.
Cook had 17 points, second in the entire game to only Durant, on 6-of-13 shooting including 5-of-9 from 3-point range. He also added a pair of assists.
Collins and Spencer Hawes also added 11 points for the West while Robin Lopez had a team-high, eight rebounds.
Henderson led the East scorers with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Young finished with 14 points, while Oden nursed his injured wrist to 10 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots in 19 minutes played. He also had an assist.
Future Georgetown power forward Vernon Macklin had a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with 6 points. Tywon Lawson and Scottie Reynolds added five assists each.
Conley played just 8 minutes and had one steal and was 0-of-3 from the field.
