News on a cancer benefit being held by some Buckeye fans:

Steve Nelson Cancer Benefit

Steve Nelson is the 39 year old husband of Lesley (Amato) and father to two children- former Avon Lake Quarterback, Anthony (19) and Westview Elementary School third grader, Heather (8). Steve was diagnosed on December 29, 2004 with Metastatic Melanoma that has traveled to both his lungs and spleen. His battle against this horrific disease began in September of 2002. His family and friends are hosting a benefit to ease the financial burden this illness has placed on the family. The lost time at work, prescriptions, treatments, numerous surgeries and doctor's visits are just a few of the trials they have endured.

Melanoma is the deadliest of skin cancers. There is little success in treatment. More than 80% of skin cancer deaths are from Melanoma. Most Melanoma can be successfully removed, but if it spreads or if it is not completely removed by surgical means, many times Melanoma will return as lung cancer or tumors in other parts of the body. Metastasized Melanoma spreads to internal organs and will/may result in death. One person each hour dies from Melanoma. Melanoma patients call this disease the *BEAST*. It is very progressive. Doctors relate the travel like a *BRUSH FIRE*. An estimated 87,900 new cases of Melanoma are expected to be diagnosed in the United States each year. In addition, 7,400 people (5,000 men and 2,800 women) are expected to die from the disease.

The event is being held on Sunday, March 6th, 2005. It will take place at the Irish Heritage Center on Route 83 in Avon Lake from 4 PM until 9 PM. Your $20 donation includes a buffet, beer and non-alcoholic beverages. Tickets are available in advance or at the door. A cash bar will be available. Live entertainment is being provided by Pitch the Peat and friends and will include an appearance by Mossy Moran. There will be numerous raffles. Donations can also be made at any Fifth Third Branch in the name of "The Steve Nelson Benefit Fund."
