NBA Summer League, Oodles from NFL and More

Though the calendar reveals this is the middle of July, there is no shortage of news from Ohio State's athletics alumni in the world of professional sports.

For proof, we bring you the Professionally Speaking Roundup, a capsule of the many stories out there involving former Buckeyes playing for pay.

For starters, there are rumblings the starting defensive backfield of the Buffalo Bills could be anywhere from zero to 50 percent former Buckeyes in 2009.

FoxSports.com reported over the weekend that Donte Whitner could be in jeopardy of losing his starting spot in training camp, a revelation that likely caught many fans by surprise, not to mention the player himself if his Twitter account is any indication. Meanwhile, the team's official site included Ashton Youboty in a group of several players in the running for starting and nickel cornerback position. Youboty won the nickel spot last year before going on the shelf for much of the season with plantar fasciitis...

In a story that threatens to make mere concerns over playing time seem trivial, Santonio Holmes recently revealed both he and his oldest son suffer from problems related to sickle-cell disease. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review had that story...

Switching sports, the weekend that just passed saw one NBA summer league stint end and another begin for 2009 first-round draft pick B.J. Mullens. He averaged 8.8 points and 4.3 rebounds while making 18 of 39 field goals (46.2 percent) for the Oklahoma City Thunder team competing in Orlando last week, and he scored five points in his first game for the Thunder at the summer league in Las Vegas on Sunday. Also potentially looking to make a name for himself in Sin City is Jamar Butler, who earned an invitation to a minicamp with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Kosta Koufos, on the other hand, will not be doing anything of the sort. He spent last week in Orlando with his team, the Utah Jazz, but did not play any games because of a dislocated finger, according to the Salt Lake City Tribune...
