Dallas first tapped the freshman center then traded him to Oklahoma City. Mullens is the fifth Buckeye drafted in the past three years, all of whom have left Ohio State after one year in scarlet and gray.

With the 24th pick in the in the NBA draft, the Dallas Mavericks selected former Ohio State center B.J. Mullens. Before the night was finished, the club sent his rights to the Oklahoma City Thunder for the rights to Rodrigue Beaubois, a French guard who was picked No. 25, and a future second-round pick.

Mullens, who finished his prep career at Canal Winchester near Columbus, was Scout.com’s No. 3 rated recruit overall and the nation’s No. 1 center in the class of 2008.

The seven-footer came off the bench primarily for the 22-11 Buckeyes, averaging 8.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game while setting an Ohio State freshman record for field-goal percentage with a 64-percent clip (120 for 188). He averaged 20.3 minutes per game and started two of 33 contests. He blocked 37 shots.

After a 14-year drought, the school has sent five players to the draft in the past three years, the most for any three-year period since the first Buckeyes drafted were Jack Underman and Paul Hudson in 1947.

The current run began with the trio of Greg Oden (Portland, No. 1), Mike Conley (Memphis, No. 3) and Daequan Cook (Philadelphia, No. 21, which traded him to Miami on draft night) in 2007 and continued last season with Kosta Koufos (Utah, No. 23).

Prior to Oden, the last Buckeye drafted in the first round was Jimmy Jackson, the No. 4 overall pick in the 1992 draft by the Dallas Mavericks.

The last Columbus native to wear the scarlet and gray before going in the first round of the NBA draft was Herb Williams, the No. 14 overall pick by the Indiana Pacers in 1981.

Overall, 46 Buckeyes have been drafted, including 21 first-round picks.
