On Youth Sports And Overspecialization

The multisport high school athlete seems to have been dying out for a while now, but the story of one former top-rated recruit who decided to give up (at least for now) the chance to be the next big thing in her sport makes this writer wonder if specialization has run amok.

At the time of the year the boys and girls on their high school basketball team who also played a fall sports should finally have their muscles back in the appropriate condition for the new season, I found second-hand an interesting story about Elena Delle Donne, who caused a stir in the women's basketball community earlier this year when she decided to quit basketball and backed out of a commitment to play for national power Connecticut.
