Like father, like son.
Four-star prospect Duron Carter of Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas has committed to Ohio State and will soon be donning the uniform worn by his famous father, Cris Carter, a former Buckeye All-American.
The younger Carter informed Buckeye head coach Jim Tressel of his decision today at senior camp.
Duron Carter had narrowed his list to five schools, including LSU, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Auburn, before finally selecting Ohio State. Like his father, the younger Carter is also a wide receiver. As a junior he caught 22 passes for 361 yards and scored eight touchdowns.
"I committed to Ohio State and it feels good to know I'll be attending the best school in the country," Duron Carter said. "I committed to Jim Tressel during a break at one the sessions. He was pretty happy and he said he thinks I can accomplish big things at Ohio State. My dad was really happy and he was pretty emotional. I'm happy to know I have my college locked in and now I can concentrate on winning a state title in high school.
"Coach Tressel said he thinks I can use my height to make plays on the outside. I'm real excited to be a part of the Buckeye family."
The elder Carter was on hand as well, and he was understandably excited.
"This is a great moment for me and I'm kind of speechless right now," Cris Carter said. "They're on a break right now and I'm off by myself taking it all in. (Ohio State wide receivers) Coach Hazell has been coaching him all day. This is kind of surreal. This morning I went for a walk and thought to myself that I can't believe how great this is. I feel like I died and went to heaven because I get to go through the Buckeye experience twice."
Duron Carter spoke about his strengths and weaknesses in an earlier interview.
"My greatest strength is my ability to separate from defenders," Carter admitted. "I try to run precise routes and I take my job seriously. I need to work on my speed and strength to become the player I want to be. I learned how hard I need to work from my dad. I know I have a lot of hard work ahead of me."
