Doss picked OSU early

Just over 10 years ago a hard-hitting safety from defending state and national champion Canton McKinley verballed to OSU. He told BSB then he hoped to compete for a starting spot right away.

Ohio State continued early success in accumulating in-state skill players with the early commitment of Mike Doss on Feb. 10, 1998.

The safety/running back became the third member of the 1998 USA Today National Champion Canton McKinley Bulldogs to agree to be a Buckeye, joining recent signees fullback Jamar Martin and defensive lineman Kenny Peterson.

“Kenny has been on me for a long time,” Doss said. “Screaming at me every day to be a Buckeye.”

Doss wasted little time in heeding those calls after he received his offer Feb. 6.

That was not before brief inquiries to both Penn State and Michigan. Prior to committing, Doss called both schools to see if they were any closer to offering him a scholarship. When both balked, he pulled the scarlet and gray trigger.

“I looked at it and said, ‘I’m going with the offer that’s already on the table,’ ” Doss said. Canton McKinley coach Thom McDaniels told BSB that Doss caught Ohio State’s eye while attending the OSU summer camp.

“He’s a big hitter,” McDaniels said. “He has a tendency to make big plays. He got some impressive interceptions and made some great hits and caused fumbles that resulted in touchdowns.

“He plays the best against the best.”

Doss, who already possessed a 2.5 GPA and qualifying 17 ACT score, had no qualms with his coach’s assessement.

“They say I’m a big hitter. I like to provide run support. They say I have great run support angles. Plus, I think I do a good job in coverage.”

He said he had no worries about ending the recruiting process early. "I feel more secure about where I'm headed," he said. "It's nice to be able to visit all those places, but I was probably going to Ohio State from the jump." Not surprisingly, he looked to 1998 All-American OSU safety Damon Moore as an inspiration.

“I see myself as a Damon Moore type, as the premier strong safety in the country,” Doss said. “I think I’m a Ronnie Lott-type player.

“I know (Moore) will be graduating and I hope to have a chance to take over for him.”

Doss was the second player to offer a verbal commitment for the class of ’99, following Lebanon, Ohio, running back Kelton Lindsay.

One day after Doss committed, Columbus Eastmoor cornerback Curtis Crsoby joined up as well.
