The Wayne Warriors entered Friday’s contest against Cincinnati
Colerain with several questions.
One question on the mind of fans was the play at the quarterback
position.
Last
season Ryan Bitsko earned the starting spot from his relief role in the Warriors
week one battle against Cincinnati St. Xavier. But the performance of the team during
their final scrimmage this year had fans questioning if the junior signal caller
was the right player for the job.
On Friday, fans from Wayne and Colerain soon learned about the super
frosh Scout.com wrote about just a month ago.
The
2007 season for Braxton Miller should have been one of learning. With great physical skills, Miller was
set to play wide receiver and defensive back as summer workouts and preseason
camp got underway. That soon
changed and Warriors head coach Jay Minton made the choice to not only use
Miller as a receiver, but to have him ready to play quarterback if
needed.
Miller’s performance during camp had him on the wings waiting for his
chance and after watching his offense have no spark, Coach Minton made the
choice to switch quarterbacks and the rest will go down in history.
Ask
any of the coaches from Colerain and they’ll be sure to tell you what they feel
about the performance displayed by Miller.
While the stats may not be overwhelming, the ability displayed by Miller
made fans from both sides take notice they were watching something
special.
The
Warriors lack luster offensive performance in the first half made the choice
easy but also a risky one. But in
his first varsity action Miller didn’t disappoint as he went 10-of-15 for 149
yards and had the Warriors offense on the move.
Yes,
the freshman had two picks, but you could see the talent as Miller threw darts
while on the run and also the ability to use his legs to get yards. Anyone who was at the game will not soon
forget they were there as Miller’s name will be one of the most talked about in
the coming years when talking recruiting.
Jay
Minton is not a coach that will oversell any of his players, but even he knows
Braxton Miller has the chance to be something really special as his star
freshman not only becomes one of the top names in Ohio, but the entire
nation.
