Licking Valley junior running back-linebacker Storm Klein has become the first member of the class of 2009 to be offered a scholarship by Jim Tressel and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Klein, one of the top prospects in the state, participated in the Buckeye summer camp this week. Bill Greene has more on this story.

Licking Valley All-Ohioan Storm Klein has been offered a scholarship to play his college football for Jim Tressel and the Ohio state Buckeyes. Klein, who rushed for over 1,800 yards and scored 28 touchdowns in 2006, was offered immediately after the completion of the Buckeye underclassmen camp.

“As soon as camp ended coach [Luke] Fickell told me they wanted to see me in the coaches office,” Klein began. “When I got inside, Jim Tressel told me they’ve been watching me for 2 years and he said they are impressed with the type of football player I am. Coach Tressel said he didn’t want me leaving the camp without knowing that I would be receiving a written scholarship offer on September 1ST and that he wanted me to be a Buckeye. He said he couldn’t give me a written offer until then because of NCAA rules.”

Klein was certainly impressive in camp, putting up a 4.55 forty-yard dash time along with a 4.20 shuttle time. Klein, 6’ 2” and 220 pounds, was understandably excited to receive the news.

“I just told him thank you for starters,” Klein said enthusiastically. “It’s something I’ve wanted to hear since I started playing football. It’s what I’ve been working for. I can hardly put it into words right now. I told coach Tressel that I needed to talk it over with my parents. He said he understood and he didn’t try to pressure me at all. I’m pretty sure they know how much I like Ohio State and to have Jim Tressel tell me that he wants me to be a Buckeye is really a dream come true. He gave me his cell number and told me to call him anytime. Coach Fickell gave me his number too. Coach Tressel said when he goes through his phone and sees my number that he knows he can’t call me, so he said to call whenever I want to talk. I told him I’m a late night talker, so be prepared.”

Pretty heady stuff for a 16-year-old sophomore, but Storm Klein possesses the maturity of someone much older. He knows there will be a target on his back for the next 2 years and said he’s prepared to live up to the pressure of being a marked man.

“It’s unbelievable and it’s what I’ve wanted since I was little, but I know I have to work harder now,” Klein explained. “This was a special day and I’m ready to get out and prove to them that I’m what they want. We should be a good team this year and it’s time to look toward my season at Licking Valley.”

Klein is good enough that the Ohio State coaches never specified what side of the ball they are recruiting him for. He worked out with the linebackers for the most part, but running backs coach “Doc” Tressel managed to steal him over to do some defensive drills for part of the camp. Klein said he doesn’t care what position he plays.

“I’ve been to the Ohio Sate camp before and worked out as a running back, but this time I spent most of my time doing linebacker drills,” Klein explained. “ I was there for 3 days and the third day “Doc” Tressel told me he wanted to see me with the football in my hands, but coach Fickell told me to get back over with the linebackers. Coach Fickell told me I would get more action at linebacker and they were laughing about it. I don’t care what position I play. I just want to get on the field as soon as possible.”

How soon might Storm Klein be making his decision? He laughed and said he had a lot to think about, but he left no doubt about the fact that this is one serious Buckeye lean.

“I’m not sure about making a decision yet,” he said with a pause. “I have a lot going on and I want to take my time and talk about it a lot with my parents. I’m going to try and not think about it too much really. I still need to get my driver’s license. The people that know me will know how happy I am about this offer. Today was a great day.”
