To nobody’s surprise Canton South’s Devon Torrence will sign a letter of intent to play football for Ohio State on Wednesday. Torrence, one of the top players in Ohio, never wavered in his desire to be a Buckeye. Bill Greene talked with Torrence about his decision to attend Ohio State.

Canton South superstar Devon Torrence has wanted to play football for Ohio State for as long as he can remember. You might say he was born to be a Buckeye. During the recruiting process Torrence made himself a favorite with all Ohio State fans by declaring early on that his list of favorite schools was “Ohio State, that’s my list.”

Torrence was offered a scholarship by Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel after an outstanding performance at their summer camp. He committed to the Buckeyes on opening day of the 2006 season.

“I’ve never not wanted to be a Buckeye,” Torrence exclaimed. “All my life I’ve thought of running out of the tunnel with that jersey on. This day is a dream come true for me.”

Torrence starred at several different positions in high school and he’s still not sure where he’ll play at Ohio State.

“They offered me as a corner,” he said. “They had me at cornerback at camp the whole time. I covered Dane Sanzenbacher and Taurian Washington a lot in camp. I think I did pretty good against those guys. It was pretty cool that we all got offered and will be playing together at Ohio State.’

“Lately I’ve talked with coach Beckman about maybe playing receiver. He told me he wants me at defensive back but wide receiver might be best for the team. I just want to win and get on the field as soon as possible. They want me to be ready to run back punts and kickoffs too.”

Canton South head coach Moe Daniska knows Torrence as well as anyone and he discussed what he liked about him the most.

“Devon has as much God-given ability as anyone I’ve ever seen,” Daniska said. “He’s a good kid too. Ohio State is getting a great athlete and they realize that. The Ohio State staff told me they love his speed and his ability to break on the football. He can help stop the running game with his ability to fill to the ball.’

“He was a great player for us. He’s extremely dedicated and he sacrificed a lot for us. He didn’t get the football as much as a senior but he was unselfish and he was the main reason we made history at Canton South by winning the first playoff game in school history.

Torrence has been selected to play in the North-South All Star game in Columbus. He is also one of the top baseball players in the state and plans to play both football and baseball at Ohio State.
