On Sept. 30, a high school varsity football game was played at Rayen Stadium for the final time. Although a game hasn't been played there since 1983, there is a long and proud history to the stadium. The most noteworthy piece of history includes the stadium being the birth place of the penalty flag on Oct. 17, 1941. Salvador Battles led Rayen to a 30-20 win in the last game ever played there.

So many great high school and college players have walked down this same tunnel into Rayen Stadium over the years. Here Gary Thornton (3) and Salvador Battles (2) lead the Rayen Tigers on to the field for the last time ever.

Rayen's Brian Shaner is the last head coach to have the privilege of leading a team to a victory at the stadium.

Battles, just a junior, leads Rayen at the quarterback position.

At 6-0, 205 pounds, the left-handed Battles can run and throw equally well.

Battles scored three rushing touchdowns on the day for Rayen.

Battles had 15 carries for 108 yards while Thornton had 24 carries for 92 yards in the game. After six games, Thornton, also a junior, had 675 yards while Battles had 525 yards.

A two-way performer, Thornton strips the ball from an East player from his linebacker position on this play.

Rayen won 30-20 at the final game to ever be played at the relic of the stadium it used to be.

Update: Rayen improved to 6-1 with a 28-0 win over Woodrow Wilson at YSU's Stambaugh Stadium on Thursday night, Oct. 5. In that game, Tomaz Hilton, who didn't play in the game against Akron East, caught a 97-yard touchdown pass from Battles. Battles scored two rushing touchdowns in the game while Thornton scored the other touchdown on a rushing play.
