O.J. Mayo

After O.J. Mayo, Ohio's Mr. Basketball for the 2005-2006 season, sat out of Thursday's state semifinal game against Archbold, he came out with a hot hand against VASJ and led his Trojans to a 90-73 victory and their second-consecutive state championship. Mayo led everyone in scoring with 34 points but played a spectacular all-around game as well. Ohio State-bound David Lighty had 20 points for the Vikings in a losing effort. Here's how some of the D-III state title game looked in pictures.

David Lighty was a big reason that his Vikings were in the state title game.

Opening tip.

O.J. Mayo played with an attitude from the outset after missing Thursday's semifinal game due to disciplinary reasons.

Maybe the only way to defend Mayo.

.....

.....

.....wham with the right hand!

Bill Walker got fouled on this dunk attempt.

In 31 minutes, Walker had 22 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.

He was 8 of 13 from the floor and 6 of 7 from the line in the game.

Walker is extremely talented in his own right as he demonstrated his skills without Mayo in the semifinals, scoring 23 points and grabbing 13 boards.

But Mayo can do it all.

He's the consumate ball handler.

Mayo stuffed the stat sheet with a LeBron James-like 34 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

In 30 minutes, Mayo was 10 of 15 from the field, 11 of 15 from the free throw line and 3 of 6 from beyond the arc.

But Lighty represented Ohio State very well in the match-up.

In 31 minutes, Lighty scored 20 points and had eight rebounds, three steals and three assists.

He was 7 of 18 from the floor, 3 of 6 from the line and 3 of 6 from 3-point range.

And Lighty rattled the rim on occasion as well.

And Lighty handles the ball very well also.

But in the end it was Mayo...

...along with Walker and Andre Evans that proved to be too much for Lighty and his Viking mates.

Viking coach Dave Wojciechowski embraces Lighty for the last time.

Lighty, who came back from a nasty knee injury last year, ends his prep career on a losing note in the state finals...

...and settles for a silver medal.

Mayo led his team to their second-consecutive state title.

Both Mayo and Walker will get another crack at it again next year for a chance at a three-peat.

Mayo is now a two-time Mr. Basketball winner and a two-time state champion.

Evans, a senior for North College Hill, was perfect on the night scoring 24 points on 9 of 9 from the floor and 6 of 6 from the free throw line.

Darryl Rushton, a senior from VASJ, tied Lighty for team-high scoring honors with 20 points.
