The Ohio State
women's basketball team cruised to a 68-45 win over Oakland in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday in West Lafayette, Ind.
The top-seeded Buckeyes (29-2) received a huge game from junior center Jessica Davenport. The Big Ten Player of the Year scored 19 points and grabbed 18 rebounds – a school record in the postseason for Ohio State. Senior forward Debbie Merrill also had a big game for OSU with 23 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Sixteenth-seeded Oakland (15-16), the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament champion, was led by Nicole Piggott with 14 points and eight rebounds. Anne Hafeli added 13 points.
Ohio State will play Boston College in the second round on Tuesday in West Lafayette. The eighth-seeded Eagles (20-11) disposed of ninth-seeded Notre Dame (18-12) 78-61 on Sunday.
Ohio State and Boston College played on Dec. 3 at Boston College and the Buckeyes emerged with a 66-61 victory in overtime.
Jessica Davenport had 19 points and 18 rebounds, and Debbie Merrill had 23 points, leading Ohio State to a 68-45 win over Oakland University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday. The Buckeyes will play Boston College in the second round.
