The Columbus Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame is having its 45th annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet on Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. at the Buckeye Hall of Fame Café in Columbus.
Awards will be given to top high school and college scholar-athletes in the Central Ohio Area. The top high school scholar-athletes will be awarded with the John H. McConnell Scholarships.
Also, 1995 Heisman Award recipient Eddie George will be honored with the Ohio Gold Award, the highest honor given by the organization for his contributions to amateur football. Recent recipients include Chris Spielman, Jim Tressel and Andy Geiger.
“Knowing Eddie since his freshman year at Ohio State, it’s been nothing but awesome watching him grow and develop into a wonderful human being,” said Larry Romanoff, president of the Columbus chapter. “He is one of the great representatives of the impact of the college football experience. We are excited to honor him and especially to add him to a prestigious list of Ohio Gold Award honorees.”
Ohio State and the NFF and College Hall of Fame have become synonymous in recent years. OSU has a record 19 National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Scholarship winners.
Recent recipients include Craig Krenzel (2003), Ahmed Plummer (1999), Greg Bellisari (1996), Bobby Hoying (1995) and Joey Galloway (1994). The Buckeyes also have 28 former student-athletes and coaches inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. The most recent inductee was Jim Houston this year.
The NFF and College Hall of Fame is a member-supported non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring the future of amateur football at local, state and national levels.
The foundation with its chapters annually awards nearly $1 million in scholarships to over 3,000 high school and college student athletes for continuing education.
“It’s a wonderful organization and event,” Romanoff said. “Coach (Woody) Hayes always preached about ‘paying forward.’ For those who played or love college football, this is a great way to support some of the great young people in our local high school and college community. The Foundation and it scholarships help mold the leaders of tomorrow through education and football.”
Individual tickets are $75 each and tables of 10 can be purchased at $750 (Corporate Sponsor). Special Hall of Fame Sponsor tables (only 6 available) are available for $2,500.
This includes a private reception with Eddie George prior to the event. There will be silent and live auction items at the event.
