Steve Helwagen: |
I
had the privilege of attending the OHSAA state playoffs this past
weekend in Canton. I covered two of the state championship games and
also joined ONN for its unveiling of our All-Ohio team. The player of
the year on the All-Ohio team was Coldwater running back/linebacker Ross Homan.
Of course, Homan is set to enroll at Ohio State in
just a few weeks so he can get a head start on his college career.
As a senior, Homan got it done on both sides of the
ball for the Cavaliers. He tallied over 1,300 yards rushing and 20 TDs
on offense and over 200 tackles on defense. I think you would be hard
pressed to find anybody in the state who played at such a high level on
both sides of the ball. And he did it for a team that rolled to a 15-0
mark and the Division IV state title.
In the title game, Homan was a one-man wrecking crew.
He had a touchdown run on offense and also tallied some 16 tackles on
defense. I think it would be a stretch to say he will step right into
one of the three linebacker openings at OSU next year. But, by enrolling
early, Homan will position himself for some work perhaps as a backup or
special teams player right away.
Homan won the player of the year award in a very tight
race over fellow OSU verbal Chris Wells from Akron Garfield, Syracuse
verbal Delone Carter of Copley and Bellaire quarterback Nate Davis.

Gary Housteau: |
Speaking
with Ray Small on the telephone on Sunday night, he convinced me that
his visit to Ohio State went really well this weekend. But in typical
Glenville fashion, he just won't come out and pull the trigger.
Off the record or on the record, I can never get Small
or any of the Glenville kids, for that matter, to toss the ultimate bone
my way. The most I ever get from any of them early in the recruiting
season is a wink or smile from them in person or an "It's a tough
decision" from them when I'm on the phone with them.
I think back to when Donte Whitner was still at
Glenville and he and Dareus Hiley had just completed their round of
official visits. I remember Donte telling me that he still hadn't
decided while we were sitting in Ted Ginn Sr.'s office at Glenville High
School on one December day.
That particular day, Whitner did go as far as telling
me that he just recently had a talk with Maurice Clarett who had
enrolled early in January at Ohio State the year before. Little did
Whitner know at the time that I already knew that the paperwork to
enroll at Ohio State had already been started and I knew he would be
enrolling at OSU the very next month just like Clarett did.
Other than Jamario O'Neal, who had committed to Ohio
State before he transferred there, none of the coveted Glenville kids
choose to go public with their respective decisions until late in the
recruiting process. It's become the modus operandi at the school.
In Small's case, he would only go as far as admitting
to me that he already knows where he's going. Throughout our brief
conversation he talked freely about all of the good things about his
visit to Ohio State but at the same time would not confirm or deny that
his choice is Ohio State.
O'Neal was his host on his visit this weekend and
Small said that he showed him around and he really enjoyed his visit.
Small also said he got to watch the groundbreaking of the new weight
training facility while he was there and that was a pretty neat
experience.
"I spent time with all of the coaches
individually and that was really nice," Small said. "They
showed me all around the campus and I got to take a look at what I'm
going to major in, sports management, so it was nice little trip."
Jim Tressel himself was one of the coaches that Small
spent some individual time with in his office.
"We sat down and talked for about 35 or 40
minutes about life and about making it in life and being a good
person," Small said. "We didn't even talk about football. He
got to know me and I got to know him a little bit."
When the proper time comes, Small will let everyone
know if his final decision is indeed Ohio State or USC. He said it will
definitely be one of those two schools even though he still plans to
visit Tennessee and Michigan State.
"SC was a nice visit, parts of it," Small
said. "But at O-State I did everything and went everywhere. They
even showed me the equipment room."
And he also talked about how nice it was to spend some
time again with Ted Ginn Jr., a player whose career he would love to
emulate in college. Ohio State is looking at him as an offensive player
while USC likes him on the defensive side of the ball.
"Ted's like a big brother to me. He's my
idol," Small said. "We talked and he told me what to do when I
get there."
Some time in January, we all will find out exactly how
big of an influence Ginn is on him. Small is still hoping a roster spot
might open up for him at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and he would
make his decision public at that time. If not, he plans do it some later
time in January.
Even though all signs might point to Small becoming an
Ohio State Buckeye, his ultimate destination won't become official until
he actually signs on the dotted line come Feb. 1, the national
letter-of-intent day.

Duane Long: |
Ohio
State's depth at defensive tackle has been outstanding for the past few
years. That is about to change with four seniors-to-be on the roster (I
consider David Patterson and Tim Schafer as tackles).
You don't want to play true freshmen at defensive
tackle in a league like the Big Ten. That is what would happen in 2007
if there are no tackles brought in this year. The two-deep would have at
least one true freshman. You want to get a couple of kids in this year.
That left me puzzled about the lack of offers to defensive tackles. It
is an uninspiring lot to choose from this year, granted, but I think
they have to get some bodies in there.
Then I noticed how many defensive ends the Buckeyes
are offering. The depth is good at defensive end, and the talent is
young. We could be seeing the staff do some intersquad recruiting. Until
a couple of outstanding all-star game showings at defensive end most
thought Alex Barrow would end up at defensive tackle. I have always
thought Doug Worthington could just as likely end up at a defensive
tackle or even an offensive tackle. We have seen this staff make this
move before.
Darrion Scott and Kenny Peterson both made themselves
into NFL players after moving down. Simon Fraser was highly effective
when he moved inside on passing downs. Moving players down is something
you see a lot in the south. That is where most of the top defensive
linemen are coming from. A good number of the top defensive ends came to
college as linebackers and a good number of the top defensive tackles
started out as defensive ends. |

Quarterback |
|

Antonio Henton
Verbals: 1
Needs: 0 |
- Antonio Henton, Peach County, Ga. *
Verbal to OSU -- 6/28/05. Will likely be lone QB in this
recruiting class. Helped lead his team to a Class AAA state
championship this weekend. Was 8-of-18 for 223
yards passing with one TD and rushed six times for 38 yards with two
TDs in the title game.
- Arvell Nelson, Cleveland Glenville
Ohio's top QB prospect. Has stated OSU would be at the top if
they offered.
- Commentary: With Henton's commitment, Ohio State is likely done with
recruiting the quarterback position this year.
|
|
Running Back |
|

Chris Wells
Verbals: 1
Needs: 1 |
- Chris Wells, Akron, Oh. Garfield*
Verbal to OSU -- 2//6/05. Visit - 12/2. Scout.com No. 1 RB prospect.
Had
a dynamite final game on 10/28, logging (unofficially) 370 yards on
37 carries to finish the season with over 2,000 yards. Garfield
missed the playoffs so Wells's high school career is done. Visited
USC on 11/4 and seemed to love the trip, but stated his desire to
play at Ohio State. Was recently named
Scout.com's top overall prospect in America. Will play in the U.S.
Army All-American Bowl in January before enrolling early at Ohio
State.
- Travis McBride, McKeesport, Pa.
Running back has had consistent interest in Ohio State
throughout the recruiting process. Latest
update from PackPride.com has Ohio State in his top five along with
Iowa, NC State, West Virginia, and Penn State. Has been talking
about a visit to OSU.
- Aram Olsen, Irmo, S.C.
Came up to OSU for the Illinois game on an
unofficial visit. Could be one to watch if the Buckeyes decide to
take a fullback.
- Commentary: Some felt the Buckeyes might try
to land two running backs this season, but Wells will likely be the
only one.
|
|
Wide Receiver |
|

Josh Chichester
Verbals: 1
Needs: 2 |
- Josh Chichester, West Chester, Oh. *
Verbal to OSU -- 7/1/05. Big receiver is having a solid
season.
- David Ausberry, Leemore, Calif. *
OSU Visit -- 9/23/05 (Iowa game). Top 100
receiver. Most
recent scout.com update states Ausberry will most likely decide from
USC, Georgia and Ohio State. Did not take scheduled visit to
USC this past weekend.
- Jeff Cumberland, Columbus, Oh. Brookhaven
Big, athletic receiver/ATH reportedly needs a boost academically
for OSU. Has shown heavy interest in Miami, Minnesota and
others. Updated academic info makes
it look like Cumberland might be a long shot for Ohio State.
- Dominique Douglas, Detroit (Mich.) Murray
Wright
OSU Visit -- 12/9. New name on the scene. Aa season of whopping
stats (86 catches, 25 TDs) has caught the attention of several area
colleges. Douglas was in attendance at Michigan for OSU-UM. Committed
to Iowa after 12/2 visit.
- (NEW) Terrence Jeffers, Lilburn, Ga. Berkmar
Recent Scout.com update quotes him as
saying OSU is coming in for a visit this week.
- Derrell Johnson, Youngstown, Oh. Mooney
Excellent athlete who is listed here as a receiver but could
play several positions. Prime in-state candidate for a Buckeye
offer. Offers from Penn State, Iowa, North Carolina,
others. Buckeyes remain solidly interested
but academic issues could play a role.
- Wes Lyons, Pittsburgh, Pa. Woodland Hills*
Visit - 10/14. Brother of OSU WR Devon Lyons. Also considering Miami (Fla.),
West Virginia, Louisville, and Boston College. Visited Ohio
State for MSU game and had positive things to say about the
trip. Boston College and West Virginia
may be the teams to beat, but Ohio State is still in the
picture.
- Damon McDaniel, Virginia Beach, Va. Landstown *
Did not list Ohio State in
most recent Scout.com update although there was mention of Ohio
State in a local newspaper report last week.
- Joe Morgan, Canton (Oh.) McKinley
Was an under the radar player before the season but is seeing
his stock rise after a strong senior year. Ohio State is showing
some interest.
- Tamarcus Porter, Pahokee,
Fla.
WR/DB prospect to keep an eye on.
Considering Ohio State and says the Buckeyes may be in his top five.
Will probably visit. Also likes BC, Iowa, Maryland, Pitt, and
Florida. Has officially visited BC and Pitt already.
- Ray Small, Cleveland Glenville *
Visit - 12/2. The latest in a long line of electric Glenville football
players. Can play WR or CB in college. Plans to announce in January.
See Gary Housteau's comments above for the
latest on Small.
- Commentary: A solid group of wide receivers
showing strong interest in Ohio State. The Buckeyes will likely try
to add at least one more receiver.
|
|
Tight End |
|

Jake Ballard
Verbals: 1
Needs: 1 |
- Jake Ballard, Springboro, Oh. *
Verbal to OSU --6/2/05. Visit - 12/2. Scout.com No. 5 TE prospect. Picked OSU over
Michigan, several others. Team is having excellent season, one of
the top teams in Division II.
- (NEW) Andy Miller, Washington, Pa. Trinity*
Visit - 12/11. Very recently offered by
Ohio State and has a Sunday/Monday visit set up. Could be an OL at
the next level. Also considering Indiana, Pittsburgh, and West
Virginia.
- Kyle Sheehan, Grayson, Ga. *
Recent report from Chris Pool states this
Purdue commit may take one last look at Ohio State. Hopes to enroll
early; visit to OSU may come before then. Can play DE or OL
but listed here as a TE because Sheehan told Pool OSU is recruiting
him as a TE.
- Commentary: An
offer extended to Miller makes it a third player in this category
that could play on the line somewhere. If more than one of these
players were to sign with Ohio State, it is likely that at least one
would be looked at in another position.
|
|
Offensive Line |
|

Connor Smith
Verbals: 1
Needs: 2 |
- Connor Smith, Cincinnati, Oh. Colerain *
Verbal to OSU -- 7/31/05. Scout.com No. 5 OL prospect. Five-star
prospect, rated by Scout.com as tops in the Midwest.
- Bryant Browning, Cleveland, Oh. Glenville *
Visit - 12/2. Was recently offered by Ohio State, making the Buckeyes the
favorites to land his signature. Also interested in Indiana,
Northwestern, others. Had good visit to
OSU this past weekend but plans on taking more trips before
deciding.
- Bill Nagy, Hudson, Oh.
Two-way lineman is a candidate for a Buckeye offer in the coming
weeks.
- Joe Thomas, OL, Lakewood, Oh. St. Edward*
Visit - 12/2. High school teammate of OSU lineman Alex Boone. Committed to
Pittsburgh in the summer but was offered by Ohio State after his commitment.
Took visit to Ohio State on 12/2 but he
announced his intentions to stick with his Pittsburgh commitment
after the visit.
- Commentary: Buckeyes would like to take more
than one OL this year, but lack of interest from out-of-state
prospects does not help. Two of top three in-state prospects, Aaron
Brown and Justin Boren, have committed elsewhere.
|
|
Defensive End |
|

Robert Rose
Verbals: 0
Needs: 1-2 |
- Jason Adjepong, Cartaret, N.J. *
Visit - 12/2. Recently began speaking with reporters
again after shutting down interviews during the season. Most recent
scout.com update has Ohio State on a list of eight schools under
consideration. Has taken one official so far (Michigan). Took
his visit to OSU on 12/2, but we have been unable as of yet to get
word from Adjepong regarding the trip.
- Walter Dublin, Sarasota, Fla. *
Ohio State has been solidly in his top five for some time. Will likely visit. Most
recent update from RutgersInsider.com has OSU in the top five with
Ole Miss, Florida, Minnesota, and Iowa.
- McKenzie Mathews, Syracuse, N.Y. Christian
Brothers Academy *
Lists Ohio State, Michigan, others. Visited Ohio State
10/14-10/16 and enjoyed the trip. Has said he will wait until signing day to
decide. Visited Pittsburgh over the
weekend of 12/2; no word yet on his trip.
- Bryant Miller, Miami (Fla.)
Central *
Lists Buckeyes as one of his favorites along with Miami, Florida State, Ole Miss, and Auburn. Interested in visiting OSU but may be
tough to get out of the south.
- Jamil Paris, Sebastian, Fla. Sebastian River
Visit - 12/9. Tall (6-7, 225) DE prospect did not play much football as a junior due
to hurricanes and injuries. Has solid interest in OSU but Florida
might be tough to beat. Surprised many people
by announcing a commitment to Kentucky after his visit on
12/4.
- Robert Rose, Cleveland, Oh. Glenville *
One of Ohio's top line prospects and a U.S. Army All-American selection.
Has officially visited USC and will visit Ohio State. Other schools
of interest include LSU, Florida and North Carolina. Enjoyed
his trip to OSU. Said he may or may not take trips to Tennessee and
Michigan State. Will decide at the U.S. Army All-American
Bowl.
- Steven Wesley, Bartow, Fla. *
Visit - 9/9/05 (Texas). Still
mentioned Ohio State in most recent update along with Miami (Fla.),
Florida, Ole Miss, and Alabama. Still has yet to visit UF and Miami.
Liked visit to OSU but could be tough to get out of the south. Committed
to Miami (Fla.)
- Brian Whitmore, Chesapeake, Va. Oscar K.
Smith
Scout.com No. 22 DE. Has shown solid interest in Ohio State, but
the Buckeyes could be facing an uphill battle behind Miami (Fla.)
and Virginia Tech.
- Commentary: Several talented ends are
interested in the Buckeyes. Many expect Rose to eventually pick Ohio
State, and the Buckeyes should be able to get at least one more out
of the above group.
|
|
Defensive Tackle |
|

Dexter Larimore
Verbals: 0
Needs: 1-2 |
- Dexter Larimore, Merrillville, Ind. *
Visit 12/2. Offered by Ohio State in September and a Michigan offer came
quickly after. Has been to games at OSU and UM and will likely
officially visit both. Rated as the nation's top heavyweight wrestler. After
visiting OSU on 12/2, Larimore is now done with official visits and
hopes to make a decision by Christmas.
- Alex Dekle, Statesboro, Ga. *
Lists offer from OSU and consistently mentions the Buckeyes
among his favorites. Also likes Tennessee, Ole Miss, Mississippi State. Recent Scout.com update had Dekle
listing no leader among Clemson, Ole Miss, Mississippi, OSU, and
Tennessee.
- Johnnie Troutman, Browns Mills, N.J. Pemberton
Township *
Talented DE /DT who is out for the season due to an ACL injury.
Ohio State is among many who have offered. Took
an official visit to Penn State on 12/2 and had a good visit. Came away saying Penn State
and Ohio State were his co-leaders, per FightOnState.com.
- Commentary: Buckeyes could use some
defensive tackles in this class but the list is short, especially
with a very thin year for DTs in Ohio.
|
|
Linebacker |
|

Tyler Moeller
Verbals: 2
Needs: 1 |
- Ross Homan, Coldwater, Oh. *
Verbal to OSU -- 2//7/05. Solid commitment to
Ohio State. Wrapped up his outstanding high
school career with a state championship ring as Coldwater defeated
Youngstown Mooney this past weekend. Was named Ohio High/ONN state
player of the year. Will be enrolling at OSU in January.
- Tyler Moeller, Cincinnati (Oh.) Colerain *
Verbal to OSU -- 9/14/05. Visit - 12/2. Having a
fine year as Colerain is in position to defend its Division I state
title. Had several big plays in nationally televised win over Tyler
(Texas) Lee.
- Navorro Bowman, Forestville (Md.) Suitland *
Visited
10/14. Has also visited Penn State and is very high on the Nittany
Lions. Is planning on announcing his
final decision on 12/8. Stated that he grew up a fan of Ohio State,
which was not previously reported. Some feel Penn State still may
have an edge.
- (NEW) Freddie Lenix, LB, Cleveland Glenville *
Lenix signed with Ohio State in February
but has been attending community college to improve his academic
status. Originally planned on grayshirting, but BearcatInsider.com
reports that Lenix took a visit to Cincinnati this weekend. As the
Drudge Report would say, "Developing..."
- Thaddeus Gibson, Euclid, Oh. *
Top remaining uncommitted recruit in Ohio. One of the best
defensive prospects in the Midwest. Ohio State, Tennessee, Michigan, and Penn State
are among his schools of interest. Academic situation could be a
concern. Will likely officially visit Ohio State. Has visited
Michigan and was slated to visit Tennessee 12/2.
- Mark Johnson, Los Angeles, Calif. Dorsey*
West Coast standout who has consistently shown interest in OSU. Has
already visited LSU and has one set up to Cal. Florida and Ohio
State are also remaining on his list of schools he'd like to
visit. A couple sources have
reported a 1/6 visit to Ohio State, but Johnson's father Daryl told
Bucknuts last week that a visit had yet to be set up. Solid interest
in OSU remains, along with LSU, Cal, Fresno State, and UCLA.
- Colin McCarthy, Clearwater, Fla. Central
Catholic *
Visit - 9/24. Outstanding athlete who visited for Iowa weekend. Has roots in Pa. Plans to take all
visits before deciding. Told
Bucknuts.com that his decision is down to Georgia Tech, Miami
(Fla.), Nebraska, and Ohio State and that he plans on checking out
OSU one more time unofficially before deciding. Talked about
deciding around Christmas.
- Eric Schwartz, Clyde, Oh.
Linebacker who is high on Ohio State; Buckeyes are remaining in
contact. Seems to be on a short list of Ohio players still under
consideration by OSU. Recently
told Chris Pool that OSU is still calling, along with Northwestern
and several MAC schools.
- Commentary: With a need for linebacker, Ohio
State has several possibilities to go with their current
commitments, but they will be in a fight for each.
|
|
Cornerback |
|

Kurt Coleman
Verbals: 1
Needs: 1 or more |
- Kurt Coleman, Clayton, Oh. Northmont
Verbal to OSU -- 6/26/05. Visit - 12/2. Outstanding
athlete; listed over 40 offers. Plays WR and CB exceptionally
well.
- Ryan Hill, Tallahassee, Fla. Rickards *
Traveled to Ohio State this past weekend.
Has said Ohio State and Miami lead the way and Alabama is also in
consideration.
- Taylor Price, Hilliard, Oh. Darby
Super-fast prospect who emerged out of nowhere by running
blistering 40 times during camps. OSU is said to be keeping an eye
on him this season. Committed to
Akron.
- A.J. Wallace, Pomfret, Md. McDonough *
Visit - 9/9. Recently told CanesTime.com
that he was focused on Ohio State, Florida State, Nebraska, USC,
Penn State, and Miami. USC is a new addition to his list as the
Trojans are starting to show interest. Took
a visit to Penn State this past weekend, and the Nittany Lions
appear to be a player in this derby.
- Commentary: The list of cornerback
possibilities is starting to narrow a bit, but OSU already has a
potential impact commitment in Coleman.
|
|
Safety |
|

Grant Schwartz
Verbals: 1
Needs: 1 or more |
- Grant Schwartz, Dana Point, Calif. Dana
Hills *
Fine athlete and the son of ex-Buckeye Brian Schwartz. Committed
to Ohio State on 10/27, not long after receiving an offer. Chose the
Buckeyes over Oregon and others.
- Mister Alexander, Houston, Tex. Eisenhower
Big (6-3, 188) safety prospect, rated No. 39 at his position by Scout.com. Told
Bucknuts last week that Ohio State informed his coach that an offer
was on the way. Ohio State and Florida State remain two schools he
likes quite a bit.
- Elijah Fields, Duquesne, Pa.
Four-star prospect who has been consistently listing Ohio State. Also
showing interest in Penn State and West Virginia. Scout.com's
Bob Lichtenfels reports Ohio State is among the list of schools
still interested. Fields said OSU will likely get a visit. Academics
are an issue. In a recent chat,
Lichtenfels listed Fields as a good possibility to commit to
Pittsburgh.
- Nick Prochak, Spartanburg, S.C.
Under-the-radar QB/DB prospect who is just
starting to get his name out more. Took unofficial to Ohio State for
the Illinois game. Grew up in Ohio and was an Ohio State fan. Was
recently offered by Clemson, his biggest offer to date. Some of the
bigger programs are taking notice.
- Commentary: What Donte Whitner decides to do
regarding the NFL may play a role in how many safeties Ohio State
would like to take.

Darius Ashley |
It was interesting to attend the state playoffs this past weekend in
Stark County. I had a chance to see Massillon juniors Andrew Dailey and
Brian Gamble up close and in person. Dailey had one of the great
individual efforts of the weekend when he stripped Cincinnati St. Xavier
sophomore Darius Ashley of the football and returned it 80 yards for a
touchdown.
Dailey plays safety for Massillon, but he could grow and become
almost an ideal OLB - perhaps in the Bobby Carpenter mold - at the
college level. I really like what I saw of Dailey, who had a team-high
nine tackles. The sky could be the limit for him as he enters his senior
year.
Gamble is a fine two-way player, but St. X never gave him an opening
to get much done on offense. He also plays defensive back and did a fine
job on that side of the ball with six stops. I want to see more out of
Gamble next year, but I think he has the potential to be really good.
St. X's Ashley is a little guy at 5-9, 170 pounds. But he runs with a
lot of heart. He is just a sophomore. Perhaps he can put on, say, 25
pounds over the next two years and change his body to where he would
become a major college prospect. For some kids who are so active that is
hard to do. I was impressed with what I saw out of Ashley. To carry the
ball 27 times for 153 yards and a 50-yard touchdown as a soph in the
Division I state title game, that is a pretty heady accomplishment in my
book.
One more name to remember from this game was Massillon sophomore
kicker Steve Schott. On what was a terrible night weather-wise, he hit a
line drive 44-yard field goal. That was no small accomplishment, either.
