Who do you think will be the guy in the 2006 recruiting class that calls other potential recruits and tries to convince them to come to OSU?
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 11:16:51 AM)
Hi palmer thanks for the first question for today. I don't see that being a very glamorous duty for any recruit to aspire to much any more. They all will put their pitch in when they come across each other at camps and combines and such but no one is really proactively getting on the phone and calling other recruits. Chris Wells is doing a good job whenever he has a potential recruit in his sights. They all respect each other's decision and the process they go through.

I wanted to know when the team starts conditioning as a team or 7 on 7.
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 11:19:09 AM)
Hi Buckeyefan13...the team has already been going through conditioning drills over the summer and ususally the 7 on 7 drills are an informal, senior led, activity. Last year it was on a certain night every week, not sure what is going on this year being in Youngstown. Steve probably has a better idea of when those things are happening. I just spoke with Lawrence Wilson recently and he was down there for a week or so before the fourth of July weekend working out with the team.
MFTodd (Jul 8, 2005 11:22:15 AM)
Does the big 10 season rest on our kicking game and ability to run the ball with the much anticipated offensive line?
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 11:22:15 AM)
Hi MFT...I think you hit on two critical areas of concern/expectations for the 2005 Ohio State Buckeyes. If the line and the backs can produce a solid rushing game to complement anything OSU might want to do in the air, things will be good. If the place kicking game isn't a total disaster either, things will go well for OSU. Every other area should be well represented and taken care of for the most part.
BuckeyeDave (Jul 8, 2005 11:24:06 AM)
Whats the next BIG news in recruiting?
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 11:24:06 AM)
It could be Connor Smith. It's a major down time and digestion time if you will. Everyone seems to be taken inventory of their respective situation and is in a major holding pattern right now. It's hard to believe OSU didn't net more than Chichester and Coleman (actually committed before he camped) out of their camp.
redondo (Jul 8, 2005 11:28:26 AM)
Hi Gary - In you opinion, what was the pecking order of QB's at the recent camp? And, were there any significant gaps in the ranking? Thank you.
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 11:28:27 AM)
Good one redondo...Wow... I guess I'll have to go with the herd mentality and say Henton was at the top of the totem pole. I think Hatline was strong. I really liked watching Davis throw the ball around. Those would be my top three. I also spent some time watching Rudy Kirbus and Miles Schlichter who both looked pretty decent at times as did the quarterback from Akron Garfield, Shafer I think is his name. Wells certainly isn't the only weapon they have there. Clearly the top three listed were my top three.
tj (Jul 8, 2005 11:33:31 AM)
Hi Gary! What is the news on Ringer? Also, HH posted on another site that Freddie L. has a long way to go with his ACT score to get accepted at OSU - so far in fact that he may not even be an NCAA qualifier right now. Any insight? Thanks!
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 11:33:31 AM)
Hi TJ, I've always been a big Ringer since I saw his play as a sophomore. I actually saw him play in person before I ever saw Tyrell Sutton in person. I'm not sure of his situation right now so I don't want to speculate, I would always have interest in Ringer but he obviously has some issues to take care of right now, whatever they may be. As far as Lenix is concerned, I have been told all along by Ginn Sr. and the people at Glenville that Lenix was clearinghouse eligible and so I have to take them at their word. I know he still needs some work to mix the GPA and the test score and make it work, hence his situation at a community college. But yes Lenix needs to buckle down and he might have a full year ahead of him at a community college. I've already stated that as much in the story I did on him after the all-star game.

You is your surprise or breakout player for the 2005 Buckeyes??
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 11:36:42 AM)
Buckeyefan13 asks who is my surprise breakout player for 2005 and I will have to say Devon Lyons. There's too much talent there to keep underwraps for another season. I think Erik Haw, by necessity, will have a great opportunity to have a breakout season. I'm certain Pittman himself will have a breakout season as the top back this year. Quinn Pitcock and David Patterson will have strong campaigns. Everybody else has pretty much broken out already. haha!
marksgforce (Jul 8, 2005 11:40:54 AM)
What's your prediction on the OSU v. UM game, including score, in Ann Arbor this year? Do you think JT might be getting inside LLLoyd's head?
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 11:40:54 AM)
Hi marksgforce...being as objective as I possibly can...playing in Ann Arbor gives the school up north an advantage. But I personally think Ohio State will be much stronger than last year and Michigan won't even be the team that Ohio State put away last year. How Michigan gets ranked so high in preseason every season just amazes me. I give Ohio State at least a 7-point victory on the road...21-14.
marksgforce (Jul 8, 2005 11:45:51 AM)
How far back do JT and Ginn Sr. go? I know both men get along with about everyone, but they seem to have a special relationship. Is that the case?
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 11:45:51 AM)
I can't give you a specific date obviously but JT mined the Cleveland area as good as anyone did when he was at Youngstown State over the years. I would have to say he goes back maybe 15 years with Ginn possibly. Believe it or not, Ginn does not use his celebrity to his advantage when it comes to his situation at Ohio State. Ginn is a lot more out of the main stream than people might believe that he is and he is respected for that.
palmer (Jul 8, 2005 11:50:47 AM)
Gary, when i read stories on rivals.com about glenville players, i get the feeling that we might be losing some of them to out of state schools. what are your thoughts?
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 11:50:47 AM)
The kids being recruited there really do want to look around and see what's out there. Donte Whitner and Ted Ginn Jr., for instance, even held firm to that in their recruitment. But it's to a point now that Ohio State is really the first and only option for the fortunate ones there that are offered by Ohio State. I say fortunate because that is the feeling there. It's a privilege for those kids at Glenville to be offered by Ohio State and because of that it's a given that they'll go there. So read all you want about them liking other places. I know Ray Small and Rob Rose as well as anyone who might talk with them and I know what the smiles and winks that they throw my way really mean...although none of them have ever told me themselves it's 100 percent OSU.

Gary... I appreciate all of the elements you add to Bucknuts. My ? is... What are the chances of Justin Boren coming back to the good guys? Thanks.
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 11:53:49 AM)
Hi DelBuck and thanks for the kind words. No chance on Boren. Move on. Along with Mario Manningham these are two major talents that I really regret losing to Michigan. I see Boren as a three or even four year starter on the Michigan line with his sleeves rolled up in sub freezing weather, just banging away at enemy defenses.
daytonbuckeye (Jul 8, 2005 11:57:18 AM)
Gary, Good Morning/Afternoon. Only 56 days till Miami and OSU!! How much pressure is put on recruits like a Brown to decide? Do college coaches apply the pressure to make them decide? I can only imagine the pressure that is on these young ment to make a decision that could possibly affect their all life.
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 11:57:18 AM)
Hi daytonbuckeye...I think a guy like Brown is one guy that Ohio State would like a decision from sooner rather than later and they might make that known to him in so many words. But at the same time, I think they have to leave the door open for a commitment from him till the very end. Unlike a guy like Myers-White last year, they can't just rescind a scholarship offer to a guy like Brown. But sometimes the dominos need to start falling in order for recruiting classes to fill out.
BuckeyeDave (Jul 8, 2005 12:00:55 PM)
I just read the BuckNuts article on Anderson Russell. What position do you see him playing? He strikes me as a player that need to be given a position to focus on.
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 12:00:55 PM)
Hi BuckeyeDave, Russell is a nice little bonus to the 2005 recruiting class. He can truly play so many different positions once he gets to Ohio State. He just might follow the path of Ira Guilford (on the field) when he gets here and get reps at RB out of necessity. I think ultimately OSU would like to use at safety, down the line, but he can play wherever they need him and be real solid, whatever position it is. Very underrated member of the class.
BuckeyeDave (Jul 8, 2005 12:01:46 PM)
What is the phonetic pronounciaton of Chichester? Is it Chic-chester or Chi-chester or something else?
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 12:01:46 PM)
To the best of my knowledge, I've always heard it pronounced Chi-chester with a long I in Chi. Correct me if I'm wrong please.
marksgforce (Jul 8, 2005 12:08:06 PM)
Since you've been "with" JT the longest, and have often been quite skeptical when fans have asserted that he will open up the offense, do you still feel the same way? With all our weapons, is this the year? I looked back at YSU stats under JT and it looks like they only averaged more than 30 ppg once. Close several other times.
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 12:08:06 PM)
For so many years at YSU, I was so used to "smash mouth" football there that it has become ingrained in my head. Every championship YSU won was by the same method no matter what else you have heard or read. Not much in his four years at Ohio State has changed to a great degree. If it wasn't for TGII's emergence last year, everyone would still be clamoring for an offensive coordinator. But I've just tried to keep it real with the expectations based on past history. And even though I'm perceived as an "OSU cheerleader" by some, which is okay by me, I think I've been as consistently vigilant about the offense's lack of performance at Ohio State as anyone. I always have wanted JT to trust his talent more instead of his philosophy but his philosophy seems to win out always. But there's just too much talent at his disposal now to screw up.

What are the chances we see some true freshmen defensive ends playing in the B10 season?
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 12:12:33 PM)
MFT I don't think they're as great as many people might think and the reason I feel that way is that David Patterson is going to probably be the third defensive end as well as the third defensive tackle...he told me as much the last time I spoke with him during the offseason. I also like Vernon Gohlston a whole lot. But Worthington and Wilson are both major talents and if anyone can crack the two-deep and earn playing time at defensive end it can be them two. I haven't seen Williams play in person obviously so I don't feel as strongly talking about his chances at this time. Wilson is pretty much a freak. Just about everyone connected to the N-S game concurs. Can't wait to watch him in the Big 33 game.

hi gary, with EJ Underwood gone who has the most realistic chance of starting across from Ashton. Is there a good possibility is would be O'neal. Thanks.
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 12:15:12 PM)
Hi vocky...I don't recognize your name from the past at all so welcome. I give the edge to Tyler Everett. The players themselves are really speaking highly of him in the offseason. And he's a leader and a veteran on this team. And he's become a playmaker over the years. I like O'Neal a lot obviously and he has a tremendous amount of talent but Everett will be the man on Sept. 3. And don't dismiss seeing TGII out there on occasion, especially when opponents are in the red zone.
bucks4fun (Jul 8, 2005 12:20:45 PM)
Hi Gary, we have Wells for 2006. Who will be the other RB in that class?
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 12:20:45 PM)
Hi bucks4 fun. I have to say I have no idea. I think Ohio State should take another to solve any depth concerns that seem to linger on. I really enjoy watching Lance Smith run, reminds me of Ray Williams, but he's not a match for OSU at this time. Elzy is an underrated back but his competition doesn't help him unfortunately. I like Elzy. Delone Carter looked pretty impressive against Garfield last year when I saw him but he's another Tyrell Sutton. He even played behind Sutton for two years before transferring to Copley. And I really like Jahmal Brown. Watch him play this year against decent competition and tell me that you don't agree. I don't know if OSU likes any of them when it comes down to it so I see them looking OOS if they do go for a second back. Again I like Jahmal Brown.

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 12:24:33 PM)
Hi ohs...I sure wouldn't mind. I'm really getting into basketball recruiting these days. Our site is rocking when it comes to hoop coverage anymore. I'll be a glutten and take Young and Raymar Morgan. Sure, why not. And then all I want for the next year is Dallas Lauderdale! And maybe O.J. Mayo and Bill Walker and Keenan Ellis as well. Smile. And Jon Diebler.

How do you see the line developing this year? How soon before Boone and Cordle find a permanent spot?
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 12:30:33 PM)
Hi ozbuck again...Can you read me now? Good! I would have to say that my opening line would look consist of Sims LT, Mitchum LG, Mangold C, T.J. Downing RG and Barton RT. Then there's Datish and Rehring with veteran experience at guard and tackle respectively as well. Datish can also play center. I see Cordle and Boone both in the two-deep early on. I also expect Jon Skinner to be a factor and Ben Person is another solid backup as well. There's just a lot of quality to choose from. I think Boone could be getting some serious PT by midseason. No hurry for Cordle but he might force someone's hand as well.

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 12:34:22 PM)
Hi osudrummer, I would ask Steve for you but he's in Indiana somewhere right now. I could call him on his cell right now? But FWIW, I see that game attracting a lot of recruits like Wallace as the game gets closer. I would guess as many as 5 or 6 nationaly guys will attend this game. Why not? I can't believe Ausberry would not want to come to this game. He's reported going to Nebraska that same weekend. Steve's not answering his cell right now...! Smile!

Hey, Gary! Who are the top prospects from my alma mater, Ursuline, this year? I have heard about Jones, but is there anyone else?
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 12:38:55 PM)
Hi Fran Davanzo...first of all you got a great young coach there now in Reardon. Jones is the major name at Ursuline but he has some work to do in the class room. Joe Underwood and Mike Bartos will also get some looks. Underwood is very underrated and a real nice talent and Bartos missed all of last year with a broken foot or ankle. Bartos is a bit undersized for the offensive line but he's national weight lifting champion. In the junior class they're raving about Matt Yarb at linebacker but he's also a touch on the smallish side. Those are the main guys right now from what I remember. I'll be stopping there soon to get an update.

gary what can you tell me about the johnson kid from mooney? he seems like an outstanding talent.
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 12:41:23 PM)
Hi Skeelo... Johnson is a big time talent, he looked pretty awesome chasing down long fly patterns at OSU's camp. Good size, very personable and he's a great athlete. His new environment at Cardinal Mooney will only make him a better football player. He'll be in much demand by the time the end of the season rolls around and his academic situation improves even more. He likes Ohio State a lot.

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 12:44:21 PM)
OSUdrummer I don't think Gibson is close to committing but Smith just might be. Reportedly Aug. 1 is the day that he will announce the school that just about everyone is expecting him to...that would be Ohio State. Gibson is much coveted at OSU but things still need to happen to make that possible. That might not happen until after the season sometime or the beginning of the next calendar year.

do you see cumberland as a TE or WR, and when should we expect an offer?
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 12:51:33 PM)
osudrummer I believe Cumberland might just be so impressive at WR this year working with Mike McGee at QB that he might make people change their opinion of him. I know that many people have him at tight end but he's not there mentally I can tell you that. He fancies himself as a wide receiver and with his ability, I have to listen and take notice of that. Again he might need to get some work done in the class room before OSU is comfortable extending an offer.

GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 12:55:24 PM)
Don't know that answer yet skeelo. I stopped over the house a week or so ago again for an update and chatted with his mom...they were not certain of what was going to happen then and I haven't heard anything since. I wouldn't be surprised if he enrolls back at YSU in the fall and doesn't play football. He might have to wait another year to play. That's just a guess on my part.

Throw Patterson into the mix also...he will be used inside and outside on the D-line. That's coming straight from him.
BuckeyeDave (Jul 8, 2005 12:59:14 PM)
How will our depth at O-Line scare off recruits? Especially recruits that want to play early, like Aaron Brown? How does Caoch Tressel handle that?
GaryHousteau (Jul 8, 2005 12:59:14 PM)
The guys that might be scared off at Ohio State would be the same guys that could be scared off by other lines at other schools. The elite prep linemen can't be scared away from any school because of depth, depth is at every school they will be considering. And if they are scared away because of depth, then Ohio State shouldn't want them anyway. Non issue.
