I talked with Curt Lukens' father, Mark Lukens, last night at the Maytag Basketball Classic in North Canton. He confirmed that Curt, a redshirt freshman at Ohio State, is moving to safety from linebacker.
"Yes, he's a safety now," said Lukens. "Curt had trouble getting his weight over the 225 pound mark, and the coaches wanted him to play at around 240 pounds. His ideal weight is 215 pounds, which is perfect for safety."
When asked who initiated the switch, Lukens indicated it was a mutual decision.
"They asked him to move to safety and he was thrilled to do so. He's always wanted to play there and feels it's his best position. Plus it's to his advantage knowing both the linebacker and safety positions," Lukens said.
Curt Lukens missed the past season after injuring his shoulder and undergoing surgery.
"His shoulder is fine now," said the elder Lukens. "Down the road we might look into asking for a sixth year, much the way Josh Huston is doing now. Curt should be 100% by the time spring practice starts. His spirits are fine and he loves everything about Ohio State. He's really enjoying being part of the team and is looking forward to getting back on the field next season."
