Faced with a nearly must-win situation in week four of the high school football season, Glenville rallied behind the stellar play of their defense to earn a 19-7 victory at Buchtel High School's Griffin Stadium.

It was Glenville versus Buchtel competing in the 2004 Soul Bowl.

Freddie Lenix was the leader of the Tarblooder defense in the game.

Jamario O'Neal had his best game of the season to date.

Junior Bryant Browning(6-4,300), Curtis Smith, O'Neal and Lenix were the Glenville captains.

Tim Conner had another outstanding day rushing the football for the Tarblooders gaining 121 yards on 16 carries with two touchdowns.

Ray Smalls, another top junior, had a long catch early in the game to get the Glenville offense started on the right track.

Daven Jones, another top junior, had a couple of nice grabs in the game...

...including this long gainer that he laid out for.

Defensive end Rob Rose, another top junior, is a force opposite Curtis Smith on the defensive line.

Offensive tackle Cyrus Kersey (#75) anchored the Buchtel line...

...helping to clear the way for this big gainer by Williams under the shadow of their own goal post on this play. O'Neal came over from his safety spot to make this open-field tackle.

On this play O'Neal is brought down while returning a stolen enemy aerial.

Junior quarterback Arvell Nelson (6-4,180) is tackled on a scramble out of the backfield.

Browning and Mike Russell (6-3,311) are two of the big guys in charge of trying to protect Nelson.

Junior linebacker Derrick Smith (6-0,185) made the play of the game for Glenville when he intercepted a 2nd quarter Buchtel pass and raced 25 yards with it for a touchdown.

Although he's not regarded as a blue-chip prospect, Conner's stock continues to soar with each impressive game-day performance.

Buchtel's Williams might not be regarded as a blue-chipper either but he sure plays like one. He's certainly a steal for the University of Pittsburgh.

Curtis Smith continues to play well defensively for Glenville.

Coach Ted Ginn provides instant feedback to Nelson after he misfired on a two-point conversion attempt.

Lenix gets one of his four carries on this play. He rushed for a modest 20 yards on the afternoon.

And finally Buchtel head coach Claude Brown is literally half the man that he was a year ago. He looks fantastic.
