I attended the McKinley-Louisville 7 on 7 Saturday, primarily to check out
the Bulldogs, and saw some impressive athletes.
McKinley's Antwon Hight was clearly the most outstanding player on the
field. At 6' 4" 280 pounds, Hight moved like a player 75 pounds lighter.
Antwon played TE and showed the ability to get deep and catch the football.
This combination of size and speed makes Hight one of the top defensive ends in
Ohio. Hight, ranked as one of Ohio's top players by Ohio High magazine, told me
he has scholarship offers from Michigan State, West Virginia, Akron and Penn State. He is hoping to improve his GPA and has not taken the ACT. If he improves
his academic standing, Hight could be one of the top recruits in Ohio.
Brad Jones is another Bulldog receiving attention from recruiters. Jones, 6'
2" 195, recently ran a 4.34 forty at Bowling Green's camp. The Falcons have
offered Brad, along with Toledo and Akron. Ohio High ranks Jones as one of the
top 40 prospects in Ohio, and he told me he has no favorite school at this time.
Most Big 10 schools are in contact, and Brad is hoping to draw more offers with
a big senior season. Jones is an excellent student.
Ryan Brinson, also ranked as one of the best in the state by Ohio High, has
filled out noticeably, and has retained his blazing speed. Ryan was recently
timed at 4.42 in the forty. This RB-CB is one of the toughest players in the
state and has been offered by Iowa. Brinson is in no hurry to select a college
and does not have a leader at this time. Brinson is 5'10" and is now 180
pounds, up from 165. With a big senior campaign, Ryan should see more offers
come his way.
Possibly the most improved Bulldog is QB Mike Shaffer. Mike is now 6' 1"
205, and threw the football extremely well Saturday. Mike is being looked at by
several Ivy League schools, and this top notch student appears to be poised to
have a big year. Shaffer, ranked as one of the top 100 players by Ohio High,
should be able to draw the attention of college recruiters as he enters his
senior season. This will be Mike's second season playing for Brian Cross, one of
the top coaches in Ohio.
Two sophomore Bulldogs appear to be future stars. Morgan Williams and Steve
Hight, Antwon's younger brother, are both ranked among the state's best by Ohio
High. Williams is a RB-CB and is backing up Ryan Brinson. Williams is 6' 0"
185 pounds and has a combination of size and speed that will make him a highly
recruited player in two years. Hight is 6' 2" 245, and could see time at
both TE and DE. Steven, an excellent student, is also a top flight baseball
player.
