Mr.
Bucknuts' Recruiting Report Card
This
report is Mr. Bucknuts' unique attempt to coordinate and grade the
recruiting process on a dynamic basis between now and the end of
recruiting season for the Class of 2004. As players commit - or emerge
on the scene - the report will change to reflect that. Your comments are
welcome! The
report is the opinion of Mr. Bucknuts and not OSU. Send

JUNE MR. BUCKNUTS RECRUITING REVIEW
There are so many subjects to cover in this early-June snapshot of
Ohio State football recruiting. We all guess, of course, at Who Has Been Offered
and even Why They Accepted. The coaches and the university are not allowed to
comment on the recruiting process so it is somewhat fanciful to hear that
so-and-so “confirmed” an offer or a commitment. Yes, we talk to the parents,
the coaches and even the kids themselves. But for every crystal-clear
conclusion, there are the recruitments with muddy interpretations. Kids that
thought they were offered (think Kenyon Buford and Frank Morton). Kids who assume
they accepted and assume they will be Buckeyes (think DaJuan Morgan and Miles
Williams). And there are those kids that commit to one school for a long time,
de-commit in the end and mess up the team’s recruiting strategy completely
(think Richard Washington).
Hey – there are kids who never figure out what they want to do (Buster
Davis) or kids that get schollies to one school but end up walking on to another
(Steve Fender). Or kids that take scholarships to a school, play for a while and
then transfer back to the school that didn’t recruit them the first time
around – even if it means they have to walk on (John Kerr and Ryan
Franzinger). Finally, there are the kids that are completely bogus, making up
information and “news” and just simply messing with the process – sort of
like those miscreants that create and spread computer viruses. Remember the
celebrated case of Travis Tolbert?
So, with all that uncertainty and the juggling of variables, you can just
come back to old reliable Mr. Bucknuts. Frequently wrong but seldom in doubt.
Castigated but with cast iron skin. And here’s where I tell you everything
I know up to, this point in time (insert joke here: ).
My focus in today’s summary will be the scholarship count, defending the
Ohio borders, the offers and updates on the best of the rest. We also always put
in a little section for those players that seem to be in transition vis a vis
their recruitment by the Buckeyes, as well.
And, most importantly, there are the players that really screw up the
recruiting process. Those are the ones that actually commit! Yes, they take
themselves off the conjecture circuit, lower their rating from the national
services (that rely on the confusion and uncertainty for their livelihoods) and
just make the whole darn thing really anti-climatic. Plus, kids commit that
weren’t even being followed and weren’t even rumored to have offers.
Like Ryan Williams.
Just one day after Bucknuts got a whiff that Luke Fickell was going to offer
Ryan, the deal was done. Ryan’s father confirmed it to us. His coach confirmed
it. And, finally, they called Coach Tressel to tell him the good news.
Ryan is a California kid hopefully more along the productivity lines of Michael
Wiley and even Ken-Yon Rambo (than kids like JaJa Riley and Jack Tucker…) who
spent some early years in Ohio (Washington Court House) listening to his grandpa
tout the virtues of playing in Ohio Stadium. A wise man, indeed. The grandson is
more a listener than a talker. He’s more a do-er than either. And now he’s
going to be a Buckeye.
A defensive end that should grow into an eventual 280-pound body, Those Who
Know say he has the fastest first step they have seen in years. A good kid, a
hard worker, and a team guy, this is great get for our Bucks. Plus, you can
always dream that he will influence his teammate, Mark Sanchez, one of the
hottest QB candidates in the country and a guy OSU recently offered. Another
plus is that the same team harbors an offensive lineman we harbor thoughts
about.
And even though Ryan is not much of a talker, we have him scheduled to join
us on the Bucknuts Radio Hour for our traditional panoply of insensitive and
barely articulate questioning. So, stay tuned…
As for the other subjects I threatened to address:
Scholarship Count
We have maintained all along that there would be 19 scholarships available
for the Class of 2005. You can go back into the archives to examine the
reasoning. But, if you’ve gotten this far, you might as well just accept that
speculative number. But now, of course, it’s all changing.
If we also accept the plausible outcome that both Ira Guilford and Louis
Irizarry have seen he last of their time in scarlet and gray uniforms, then we
can boost that schollie count by two more – to 21. I choose to do so. And I
choose to suggest that the Bucks will use these “additional” scholarships on
a fourth offensive lineman and a tight end. The lineman projection is based upon
the observation that OSU already has two excellent kids in the fold (Boone and
Cordle), yet they are recruiting and offering a whole bunch of out-of-state kids
nonetheless. Far too many to pick just one. In fact, far too many from New
Jersey to just pick just one! The tight end newbie is due to the sad fact that
Irizarry was an essential ingredient at that position and now we appear to be
one short. We might not get another like Louis (there’s ying and there’s
yang in that thought), but we need to get another TE to keep the pipeline
functioning. Check out the chart on the bottom of this summary to see the new
numbers and how they might play out.
Defending the Ohio Border
We don’t worry so much about anyone sneaking in from Indiana, Kentucky or
West Virginia as we do someone flying in on a jet from the coast or peddling
propaganda from up north. Two years ago, we lost Prescott Burgess and Shawn
Crable to Michigan and Brady Quinn to Notre Dame. Last year, we lost Fred Davis
to USC and Ray Williams to…well, that’s another story. This year, we’ve
lost Mario Manningham to the evil empire due north. But that’s still just five
in the past three years, if we can hold the line right there. Let’s take a
look…
The top two players in Ohio are also the two that will be on everybody’s
Top 100 list: Jamario O’Neal and Alex Boone. They are both early
commitments to the Buckeyes already. The consensus #3, #4, and #5 Ohio kids will
probably be Jim Cordle, Adam Myers-White and Todd Denlinger. Cordle
is another early Buckeye commitment, AM-W told me in a radio interview that his
odds of being a Buckeye are “at least 95%”, and Todd Denlinger will most
likely commit in the next week. These aren’t the proverbial “locks”, I
guess, but you have to like our chances.
Of the “bottom five”, we’ve already lost Manningham which leaves (and
we are speculating here on who the other four might be) Freddie Lenix, Alex
Daniels, Brandon Harrison/Javon Ringer and Brian Hartline. Lenix
doesn’t have an offer yet, but he will. And when he does, Mr. B here says he
will be a Buck. Daniels has a verbal offer that will be written at camp time and
he will gratefully accept and be a great Buckeye. Both CJ products would be
Buckeyes if we pull the trigger in time and Hartline has already expressed that
opinion.
The borders seem relatively safe for at least another season…
Let’s talk offers
If you really want to speculate in recruiting, you have to speculate on
offers. There are verbals out there that maybe kinda probably don’t count.
There are verbals that do. And there are those “self-reported” offers that
drive us all crazy ‘cause we have to count them just ‘cause the kid
says he’s got one!
According to my official unofficial count, there have been 43 offers made to
the kids that will make up the next recruiting class. Six have accepted (Bauserman,
Pettrey, O’Neal, Boone, Cordle and Williams) and two have chosen to go
elsewhere (the aforementioned M&M and Jason Gwaltney, who has formally
committed to West Virginia). That leaves about 35 offers outstanding for the 15
remaining spots. And there will probably be 20-25 more offers made before all is
said and done! Go ahead – try the math at home…
Therefore, I submit my chart of the guys I think have been offered that haven’t
committed anywhere. I divided them into three groups: the ones we have the best
shot at getting, the ones we don’t, and offers that are only rumors (meaning I
am just guessing along with everyone else). Here’s the neat new chart:

NEW OFFERS
Alex Daniels: When is an offer not an offer? When it is verbally
communicated by Luke Fickell and not written down. That’s what Alex says is the
deal with OSU. He seems confident that he will get a written version at the OSU
camp in late June. He has a ton of other offers from illustrious names like
Oklahoma.
Eric Sledge: Great name for a hard-hitting football player, eh? Eric is 6’3”
and 190 with the ubiquitous 4.4 forty. His coach says he has 15 offers including
OSU, Michigan, MSU, Florida and Miami but Eric says, “Ohio State is my top one”.
Mikell Simpson: No relation to Ohio’s Mister Simpson, this large PA
running back has the size and speed to make him an exciting prospect. Rumors are
that we have offered and that’s where we’ll leave it…
Spencer Adkins: A linebacker that might grow into a DE, Spencer is 6’1”
and 225 and a sub-4.5 guy, hailing from Naples, FL. He lists OSU on his offer
sheet along with Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Miami and
Oklahoma. You remember Mr. B’s theory about big-namers from the south getting
offers from the south, now don’t you?
Brian Cushing: He has more offers than the only girl at a stag party. He
is official on the Buckeye list to go along with new offers like Wisconsin and
the jet-setters from USC. He says he wants to visit USC, Stanford, Miami,
Florida State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Ohio State, Penn State and BC this
summer. From the Buckeyes’ perspective, it’s a great time to visit those
southern schools!
Todd Denlinger: As of this writing, Todd has the offer in hand. This
seems to be more of a “when” rather than an “if” for a commitment.
Nick Harris: A small linebacker or big safety from Alexandria, Louisiana;
Nick is 6’3” 200 pounds with a 4.5 forty. He lists offers from Arizona
State, Michigan, OSU and Texas A&M.
Eugene Monroe: Another big New Jersey offensive lineman that might be the
most sought-after player in the state. Eugene has generated offers from USC,
Virginia, Maryland, Miami and Nebraska, as well.
Shawn Oatis: Shawn is from Chico CA. he’s 6’0” and 205 and plays
safety and tailback. He is reporting offers from UCLA, Washington, the Oregon
schools, the Arizona schools and the Buckeyes.
Byron Eaton: Byron told reporters that he had been offered by the
Buckeyes along with Oklahoma, Baylor, Oklahoma State, and Illinois. Byron is
officially an “athlete” who has played some QB. He is listed as 5’11”
and 210 pounds and has as big a rep as a basketball player as he does on the
gridiron.
Tray Rutland: Tray is a Georgia QB who has the Georgia schools way at the
top of his list. They have both offered. He had stand-out quarterback camps and
listed a dozen big schools that have extended offers in addition to OSU.
Paul Selmon: An Alabama offensive lineman that has generated very little
buzz and only one offer to date. An enigma, but maybe not for much longer.
Callahan Bright: Big and bright, Callahan is 6’2” and 315 ponds and
can motor as a DE with a 4.9 40 time. He wrestles, puts and shot and plays
lacrosse (that’s quite a visual…). Bright hails from Pennsylvania and has
garnered offers from all the big Florida schools plus LSU, Nebraska, Texas
A&M and the Buckeyes.
Melvin Alaeze: A DE from Maryland, Melvin got an offer from the Buckeyes
and Virginia Tech on the same day. He’s being recruited by Luke Fickell (who,
like Zorro, seems to be everywhere…) and says he plans – right now – to
visit Maryland, Miami, Virginia Tech and Ohio State.
Kade Weston: A 6’6” 300+ pounder from New Jersey, Weston is a
defensive tackle that lists offers from Florida, Florida State and Ohio State.
Nyan Boateng: It’s hard to make up a name like that or his claims that
he has 25 offers including OSU, Miami, and USC. He is a 6’2” WR/DB candidate
that is from Joisey.
Brian Roche: Roche seemed like a lock for Virginia but then something
went wrong. Ohio State is in the hunt for this offensive lineman from New
Jersey. He’s also been offered by most of the Big Ten, a majority of the Pac
10 and pretty much everyone else.
Selwyn Lymon: He is a good enough athlete to be able to get scholarships
in track, basketball or football. Hailing from Fort Wayne IN, Selwyn has offers
from the Bucks, Michigan, Purdue and Penn State just in his Big Ten bushel. He’s
big, very fast and probably the 3! Footballer in Indiana. I know, I know…
Raymond Henderson: The athletic DE, Henderson has OSU on a list that also
includes Iowa, Notre dame, Miami, LSU and Penn State amongst his leaders that
have offered. As a teammate of LB Travis Beckum, they could be doing some
traveling together.
Carlos Thomas: A Georgia wide receiver that blew everyone away at the
Nike camp, Carlos has the Buckeyes in the top group along with Florida, Georgia,
Clemson and Oklahoma. He likes the fact that OSU has told him that they would be
interested in Carlos playing both ways (WR/DB).
Anthony Felder: A Washington (state) linebacker that has seven offers so
far suggests that he has a verbal offer from the Buckeyes.
Stephen Gowland: A Georgia tight end that got his first offer from Troy
State and his second from Ohio State (!). This has suddenly become a position of
need and Gowland goes from nowhere to the top of the class.
Kevin Bemoll: The third in the holy football trinity from Mission Viejo,
this 300-pound O-lineman is rumored to have an offer from Ohio State along with
offers Florida, LSU, Arizona and Oklahoma. His coach said he could be better
than USC star Drew Radovich, who played there two years ago.
THE LIST IN TRANSITION
Off The List
Ryan Perrilloux: OK, I kept him on my “Dream Team” out of
stubbornness and the fact that we don’t have an alternative to the peripatetic
Bauserman. But the other fact is…he’s got 65+ offers and doesn’t mention
us in the top 30! I guess that’s why they call it a “dream” team…
Gene Delle Donne: We never really knew much about this big QB gunslinger.
And while all the questions were still out there, Gene committed on his first
visit – to Duke.
Fred Rouse: The Bauserman connection comes into play here, too, as Fast
Fred was a teammate of Joe’s. But the Perrilloux comparison is more apt: Fred
has dozens of offers and OSU isn’t in the top 50%. The dream is over.
Justin King: See Perrilloux and Rouse…This PA speedster can go anywhere
he wants. One of those places might be Michigan. It’s not going to be
Columbus.
Ekom Udofia: He mentioned OSU early on but we never offered and we never
heard him mention us again. That’s enough…
Jeffrey Owens: An early mention for this FL DT, but he no longer mentions
us and we haven’t offered him.
Ray Herring: Another Florida guy that hasn’t gotten an OSU offer and
doesn’t seem to fit the picture anymore.
Rahmir Cottman: No news. No further relevance.
On The List
Mikell Simpson: We have him “listed” as a running back but he might
come into play as a DB. One to watch and we will keep you updated.
Carlos Thomas: A new offer from the Buckeyes and the interest seems to be
mutual.
Eugene Monroe: This big O-lineman fills a position of need and has a
Buckeye offer to prove it.
Eric Sledge: Eric says we lead for this safety candidate and we recently
offered so the possibilities are there.
Nyan Boateng: An offer was extended and Nyan might be our highest rated
CB, at this point.
Bryan Robiskie: He has interest from all over. Depending on offers to
out-of-state dazzlers and the eventual decision about Brian Hartline, this Bryan
could be the one.
BJ Travers: A tackling machine LB with great size that might be a step
slow. Duane Long compared him to Mike Kudla and that’s certainly not all bad.
Melvin Aleaze: A big possibility at DE, this Maryland candidate recently
received a buckeye offer.
Callahan Bright: Both an offer and an interest elevates Callahan to the
top of this class.
Nick Harris: He says he likes the Buckeyes and we like him enough to
extend an offer.
Ray Henderson: The best player in Wisconsin would look good in Columbus.
Selwyn Lymon: An unusual athlete that is probably Indiana’s top
footballer. Has an offer from OSU, now…
Stephen Gowland: The only tight end on the list, this camp stand-out is a
new addition.
With the necessary archiving now comfortably behind us, let’s get to our
favorite part of recruiting: the unvarnished speculation!
In order to appear more credible, I have compiled all my guesswork and
fantasies into a couple of nifty charts. The first one shows (this month’s)
preferences as to how I would like to see the Buckeyes fill out their 21-man
class for 2005. The second chart shows a “more reasonable” approach to what
might happen given the information we currently possess. No one is right or
wrong here as the circumstances are in a constant state of flux. But – being
as competitive as the next guy – I would rather be right-er than wrong-er.
We’ll see how it works out…

Finally, we can look at the overall grid as to how I place our progress and
positioning. Don’t forget that we will know tons more once the OSU camp
ends in late June. Questions will be answered and new questions will be forged.
Will Brandon Harrison show up at camp or simply show up the Buckeyes? Will Todd
Denlinger commit by then? (I say by the end of this week…). Who will get
offered at camp? (I say Hartline and Daniels). Who amongst the current offer-ees
will commit at camp? (I say Adam Myers-White).
And if what I say actually comes true (calculate those odds…), then
OSU will have as many as 10 commitments in the fold by July. That’s a heck of
a start. And that’s a heck of a class.
Let’s take a look:
