Dane Romero of West Chester Lakota West is one of the top athletes in the
Cincinnati area this year. The 6-1, 185 (4.5 40) Romero can play on either side
of the ball in college and did a bit of everything last year for Lakota West as
he played both ways and all special teams.
"I never left the field," he said.
Dane had over 80 tackles and over 1,000 yards rushing.
"And I was leading the team
in catches earlier in the year coming out of the backfield," he added.
Dane prefers defense though, and that is where most schools are looking for
him to play.
"I don't care where I end up, but I would prefer to play safety.
"I am not sure where they want me to play, but most want me as a
safety," he said.
Dane is currently hearing from Ohio State, Miami (OH), Pitt, Iowa, and Kansas State.
He's originally from Kansas.
"Most of my family's back there and in New Mexico," he said.
Right now, the Kansas State Wildcats are at the top of his list.
"Coach Cox has talked to Coach Snyder out there," Dane said. "I wanted to get out there for some practices over spring break but it didn't
work out.
"Kansas State is home, so they would be at the top of my list."
Before making a decision, getting a feel for the coaching staffs of
particular schools will be important to Dane. He'll be focusing on that in the
coming weeks.
"I will need to see the coaching staffs at work," he said. "I want to get to see as many
as I can this spring."
Dane, who wants to be a special ed teacher, will also be attending Nike Camp
and the MSL Camp in Cincinnati this spring. He wants to make sure of his status
before making any final choice.
"I need to find out where I stand before making a decision," he
said. "The right offer
would get it over with."
