Meyer Gives Post-Practice Updates

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer spoke to the media following Wednesday's practice.

- Urban Meyer said Ohio State will not prescribe a play or situation or drive in which Cardale Jones would come into the game in place of starting quarterback J.T. Barrett.

- Meyer was asked about what his pregame message to Barrett might be: “It’s not like the second chapter of Coaching 101. Everyone’s demeanor is different. I anticipate anxiety… Every player is different. Tom Herman has done a really good job with J.T.”

- Meyer said Ohio State started preparing for Navy’s triple option on the first day of fall training camp. He noted that was contrary to the first instinct of “install, install, install.”

- Meyer said that Navy’s triple option is one of the better ones that he’s seen in his career and singled out quarterback Keenan Reynolds for the way he runs it. “He’s really good.”

- Freshman cornerback Marshon Lattimore had surgery. He pulled a hamstring during high school track season and it was looking better in summer. He said it’s about a three-month injury and noted that Lattimore will redshirt.

- Meyer talked with Braxton Miller this morning.

- Meyer is excited about running back, which had three players on the depth chart listed at the top spot. “Bri’onte (Dunn) and Rod (Smith) were kind of written off. We didn’t talk about them much, but they’re not written off anymore. They had a good training camp.”

- Meyer says they recruited freshman running back Curtis Samuel – one of the aforementioned players at the top of the depth chart – to play the “H” position but reversed course because of the success he had at running back this spring.

- Meyer on Navy: “Every possession is going to be critical when you play one of the service academy teams like this. You’ve got to get first downs. You’ve got to march them down the field. You can’t three-and-out against this team or you’ve got a problem.”

- Meyer joked about the margin for error all the underclassmen on the two-deep might have: “No leeway. You make a mistake and you’re out.”

- He then said that mistakes are tolerable as long as the players are playing full speed. “Mistakes are on the coaches. Lack of effort is something we can’t do. I think we’ll play really, really hard.”

- Is it good or bad that there are a lot of “OR”s on the depth chart? “I’ll let you know after the first game… I think it’s a positive.”

- Urban Meyer on playing service academies: “I have a lot of experience against Navy and Air ForceArmy when I was at Notre Dame I think we played once or twice. I have a tremendous amount of respect for who they are… you take that out of the equation this time because I think they’re really good.”
