Buckeye Leaves: Buffalo Game

Ohio State's season-opening win against Buffalo on Saturday included a few standout performances. BSB staffers pick who gets their Buckeye leaves for the game.

Fans, give us your vote on who you think deserves a Buckeye leaf for their performance in the Ohio State win against Buffalo. Let us know on the Ask the Insiders forum.

Pat Brennan: Senior receiver Chris Fields came into Saturday’s game against Buffalo with one career touchdown, and he doubled that number by the end of the Buckeyes’ 40-20 win against Buffalo. Fields had three catches for 53 yards and two scores — one in the first quarter and one in the third — on a day when Corey “Philly” Brown didn’t put up big numbers (two catches, 25 yards), making his production that much more crucial to OSU's cause.

Ryan Ginn: Although he had some big holes to run through – most noticeably on his career-best 49-yard touchdown run – Jordan Hall answered the bell for a team missing Carlos Hyde and Rod Smith. Hall tallied career-high marks of 159 yards and two touchdowns, both of which came on runs of at least 35 yards. Whether he can keep his job when his backfield mates return remains to be seen, but he delivered in the season opener.

Matthew Hager: My player of the game is Curtis Grant. The junior returned to a starting middle linebacker role and looked the part. He made seven tackles – tied for the team best – and was on the field for most of the afternoon. A happy Grant told reporters after the game that it was the first time he had played a full game since high school. The one-time five-star prospect needs to have a good season if the Buckeyes are to reach their potential. So far, so good.

Marcus Hartman: Jordan Hall answered questions about his ability to run between the tackles in Urban Meyer's offense by exploiting seams in the Buffalo defense for 159 yards on 21 carries. His 49-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter gave the Buckeyes a commanding lead, and his 37-yard scamper for a score in the second restored a three-score lead at 30-13. He averaged a robust 7.6 yards per carry on the day.

Jeff Svoboda: I’m gonna have to go with Chris Fields. Guys like Ron Tanner and Jordan Hall overcame past adversity to have good days, but perhaps no one deserved their big day more than Fields. The Painesville (Ohio) Harvey native didn’t do much for OSU his first three years then made just one big catch last year, and people started to overlook him coming into his senior year thanks to the explosive freshman class the Buckeyes brought in. Yet Fields won playing time at the hotly competitive “H” spot in spring and held it this fall even after those ballyhooed freshmen came in. With two touchdowns in the opener, Fields gets my Buckeye leaf.

Ari Wasserman: When offensive coordinator Tom Herman said that Kenny Guiton could start at more than half of the programs in college football during fall camp, it seemed like he was stretching. But after Guiton relieved starting quarterback Braxton Miller – who was out with cramps – and led OSU to a touchdown drive, it becomes clearer that maybe Herman was onto something. Recently named one of OSU’s eight captains, Guiton has now led OSU to touchdowns on nine of his 16 drives dating back to last year. Guiton’s clutch performance in OSU’s opener makes him my clear choice for this week’s Buckeye leaf.
