The New York Jets may have to wait until Santonio Holmes is 100 percent healthy to return to the field.

Last week several media reports indicated that Santonio Holmes was nearing his return to the football field, but after speaking with reporters on Wednesday the Jets' top wideout could still be a long way from being ready for live practice.

“All I did was run straight ahead and did sprints,” said Holmes of playing catch with Geno Smith before last week’s preseason game. “That’s pretty much what I’ve been doing up until this point. The past couple weeks is just sprinting straight ahead.”

Holmes has yet to plant or cut on his surgically repaired foot, which has been causing him pain since the injury first happened last November. Nearly ten months since sustaining the season-ending foot fracture, Holmes is still feeling the ill-effects.

“I think it is something I have to learn to tolerate at this point because the injury itself is going to be a tough one to overcome,” said Holmes of his LisFranc injury. “Mentally, it’s definitely a big challenge to come back off a foot injury that required to have a long procedure and I want to say about seven or eight months of no physical contact on the foot.”

The Jets' training staff is in the process of finding a shoe with enough cushion and support to allow the Jets' receiver to start aggressively rehabbing.

“Comfort has to be the number one key,” admitted Holmes. “Right now it is finding the right shoe for me to to wear to be able to run and do all those things.”

A few short days ago it appeared a possibility that Holmes could be ready to start the regular season, but the receiver casted serious doubt on an early season return; not ruling out the likelihood of missing the entire 2013 campaign.

“I don’t know how to answer that question as far as missing the whole season,” Holmes said. “I mean we have 16 weeks of football. At any point I could be ready to play. If not, I would be willing to accept it.”
