While he eventually lost his starting spot last season, Benny Parker learned a lot as a freshman last season and will bring depth to the point guard position.

Benny Parker

Height: 5-foot-9

Weight: 164

Position: Point Guard

Year: Sophomore

Hometown: Kansas City, Kansas

Previous School: Sumner Academy

Out of High School Offers: Nebraska, Creighton, Murray St.

Strengths: As just a true freshman, Parker found himself as the starting point guard for the Huskers last season. Despite losing that role to senior Dylan Talley, Parker showed great poise in his first season at Nebraska. The sophomore brings an unselfiness to the position and can be labeled a true point guard. He is a pass first, score second player, and with the playmakers Nebraska head coach Tim Miles has been able to bring to the program, it might be just what the offense needs.

His quickness and ball handling keeps the defense on it’s toes and forces big men to help off their man, and stop the penetrating point guard. His unselfish type play should be able to set up a lot of open shots for the likes of Ray Gallegos, Terran Pettaway, Tai Webster, Shavon Shields and Walter Pitchford.

Weaknesses: The biggest weakness Parker has is something that he can’t control – his height. The 5-foot-9 guard often finds himself with a lot of pressure after he picks up the ball, and no way to get it out. Getting shots up and driving to the basket to score is also a problem for Parker against Big Ten competition. If he can continue to tune is skills as a true point guard, then the lack of scoring should be no issue for the Huskers.

2012-13 Look Back: After starting the season as the starting point guard, Parker eventually lost his job when Shields moved into the starting line up and Talley shifted over to the point guard. In his freshman campaign, the Kansas City native averaged 2.7 ppg., 1.3 rpg, and 2.1 apg.

2013-14 Outlook: With an off-season issue centered around Deverell Biggs, many think that Parker could start the season at point guard in his sophomore season. But it's more likely he will be backing up junior point guard transfer.
