Sound Mind Sound Body: 2013 Preview

How loaded is Sound Mind Sound Body this year? We are approaching 100 players with offers, many of them already committed to major programs, some of the top underclassmen in the country and 200 expected college coaches.

The most unique and talent laden event in the Midwest is back, and this year's Sound Mind, Sound Body might end up being the best of the bunch. Players from as far as Florida, California and Georgia are coming up to join prospects from Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and of course, bushels of talented recruits from Michigan.

In past years, players have gone from unknown to having several offers thanks to the camp. We've had a chance to see future NFL players like William Gholston as a freshman. We saw James Ross, Royce Jenkins-Stone and other future Big Ten players as 8th graders. Once again, this will be a platform, not only for known prospects, but for young players and guys who may not be on the radar to put themselves on the map.

The opportunity for them to do that will be there largely because of the many college coaches who will be in attendance. Over 200 coaches are expected, including four Big Ten head coaches: Wisconsin's Gary Andersen, Michigan State's Mark Dantonio, Michigan's Brady Hoke and Ohio State head man Urban Meyer. From the MAC, Central Michigan head coach Dan Enos, Western Michigan's P.J. Fleck and Kent State's Paul Haynes will attend and coach the event. In total, 16 head coaches are expected and coaches from near and far and various divisions and conferences will make sure players will have opportunities on multiple levels.

Those coaches will have plenty of talent to look at on the field. Detroit Loyola's Malik McDowell has scholarship offers from across the country and is one of the top 40 players in the country. As is Ohio State commit Damon Webb, who has lived up to his lofty ranking at camp stops during the offseason.

Recent Penn State commit Michael O'Connor leads the way at quarterback. He will be able to throw to Allen Lazard, a four-star wide receiver committed to Iowa State, Daniel Clements from Alpharetta (Ga.), who has five offers, and a sleeper we really like in Cincinnati (Ohio) La Salle's Izaiah Fuller. At tight end, one of the top attendees will be Michigan State commit Matt Sokol.

They will have a tough group of defensive backs to contend with, including Cleveland Glenville's Marshon Lattimore, the top player in the state of Ohio and four-star Texas product Ed Paris, who is committed to LSU. Donovan Clark, Tim Cason, Curtis Brunson, Detroit King's duo of Avonte Maddox and Jalen Embry, Dillon Dixon and Jalen Watts-Jackson are all corners coming who hold FBS offers.

At safety, Cedric Dale comes up from Texas with two offers. Another Texan is Stanford commit Brandon Simmons, a four-star prospect. Drue Tranquill of Fort Wayne Carroll is quickly adding offers and is one of the prospects we think may add them at the event.

The running back group is lead by two four-stars in Minneapolis Washburn's Jeff Jones, a Minnesota commit and Niles (Ill.) Notre Dame Prep's Chris James. Detroit Country Day's Richard Wilson holds several offers. Esaias Chapman from Georgia and Raymonte Maynard from Minnesota also have offers.

On the offensive line, Ohio State commit Marcelys Jones is a big, powerful player who has done very well at offseason events. Frank Ragnow (Chanhassen, Minn.) is up to double digit offers, while fellow Minnesotan J.C. Hassenauer has dominated at several offseason camps and has a few offers to his name as well. Two Western Michigan commits, Chukwuma Okorafor and Curtis Doyle are joined by another Michigan prospect, Nick Padla. Another to watch is tough, hard nosed Canadian prospect Noah Domingue.

Their competition on the defensive line will include Michigan State commit Enoch Smith Jr. and Clarkston (Mich.) duo David Beedle and Nick Matich on the inside and Michigan commit Lawrence Marshall and four-star O'Fallon (Ill.) prospect Dewayne Hendrix outside. Also attending will be Bowling Green commits Brian Sanders and Jalen Dingle and Fort Wayne South Side's Nathan Braster, who has four offers.

The linebackers include Michigan State commit Deon Drake, Penn State commit Jared Wangler, Toledo commit William White and prospects like Miami Palmetto's Mikal Smith, Detroit Cass Tech's Gary Hosey and Detroit King's Carl Fuller, who have offers.

In the 2015 class, Orland Timber Creek running back Jacques Patrick holds nearly 40 offers, while Cretin Derham Hall (Minn.) defensive end Jashon Cornell is over 20. Canton McKinley's Eric Glover-Williams is a speedster with plenty of BCS interest. Detroit Cass Tech's Joshua Alabi, Jayru Campbell and Mike Weber all have BCS offers, as does Saginaw Heritage's Brian Cole. Northville (Mich.) offensive lineman David Moorman, East Grand Rapids (Mich.) linebacker Carter Masek and Fort Wayne (Ind.) Carroll running back Justin Tranquill also have early offers.
