Young's Buckeye Board: Safety

Quincy Wilson

Ohio State currently has eight commits for the 2014 recruiting class, and the assistant coaches have hit the road during the spring evaluation period checking out top prospects. Who is on the Buckeye recruiting board? Derek Young takes a look at the safety position.

SAFETIES: (1-2)

TARGETS:

1- Juju Smith, Jamal Adams, and Laurence Jones.

The three targets in the first group are five-star prospects and rank as three of the top four safeties in the nation. The Buckeyes' staff would love to land one of the top players in the nation at safety but they are a bit behind in the chase for the nation's bests at safety.

Laurence Jones has been operating his recruitment as someone that will remain in the southeast. Juju Smith and Jamal Adams have both mentioned possible visits to Columbus to check out the Buckeyes. Whether those trips take place is still up in the air.

2- Erick Smith and Quincy Wilson.

As is usually the case with prospects from Cleveland (OH) Glenville that receive offers from Ohio State, the Buckeyes have a great chance to land another Tarblooder in Erick Smith. He's taken a handful of visits to Columbus already and a late college decision is expected.

Quincy Wilson could very well end up in the Buckeyes' class. He camped at Ohio State last summer and the plans are to repeat that trip again this summer. The Ohio State coaches got in on him early and it could pay off.

3- Montae Nicholson, Cortez McDowell, and D.J. Smith.

The chances someone from this group signs with Ohio State appear very slim. The Buckeyes' 2014 signing class should be smaller than the previous one with a lot of spots being devoted to prospects along the offensive line and at linebacker to help with immediate depth.

With limited space for safeties and a good shot at hitting on higher targets on the board, neither of the three would be in my projected class at this time. If more spots become available or there's reason to focus on another safety, Montae Nicholson would be the best bet out of the group.

4- Kirk Tucker and Mattrell McGraw.

Both prospects in the final group raked in their Buckeye offers within the past month. McGraw is a talented player out of Louisiana that has seen his stock rise and a plethora of other offers have come in as a result. He has yet to name a top list but Oregon is in great shape to add him.

If things fall apart for Ohio State and their other targets, Kirk Tucker could be a name to watch. The Georgia native will be in Columbus towards the end of June to perform in front of the Buckeyes' staff. A strong performance could push him up the board.
