This Thursday will begin the weekly high school football telecasts by Fox Sports Ohio. The Opening week matchup has Akron Buchtel heading to Massillon, where the Griffins will look to upset the Tigers in the same fashion as the 2010 opener.
Buchtel is coached by former player Rickey Powers, and the Michigan alum has had great sucess coaching at his alma mater. After reaching the state championship game in 2010, Buchtel finished 6-4 last season and missed the playoffs. Powers will look to senior wide receiver Elijah Bell to make plays with the football in his hands. Bell holds scholarship offers from Air Force and Boston College, and is ranked as one of the state's top wideouts.
Massillon has high expectations for the upcoming season, and features the most talented team of Jason Hall's tenure at the school, with several highly-rated prospects. Seniors Kyle Kempt (Cincinnati commit) and Gareon Conley (Michigan commit) will be expected to be leaders of this squad, with Kempt in his third year as the starting quarterback. Conley stars on both sides of the football, at cornerback and wide receiver.
The Tigers also have several top-rated juniors, including linemen Nathaniel Devers and Chase Lash. Junior playmakers Beau Huffman and Marcus Whitfield are also drawing recruiting attention from college scouts at this time.
Massillon will look to avoid the upset in the first week of the season, while Buchtel will look to use a victory over the Tigers as a springboard to a great season, much like they did in 2010.
