Patriots place Mankins, Vollmer on PUP

On Tuesday the Patriots designated offensive linemen Logan Mankins and Sebastian Vollmer as active/PUP. Two starters down,

The Patriots assigned six veterans to the active/physically unable to perform list at the start of training camp Monday at Gillette Stadium.

Projected offensive line starters Logan Mankins (knee) and Sebastian Vollmer (back) were expectedly listed on active/PUP and can be removed at any team after first passing a team physical. To leave open the option of using the PUP designation at the start of the regular season, players must begin training camp on that list.

Inside linebacker Brandon Spikes (knee), tight end Jake Ballard (knee), defensive tackle Myron Pryor (shoulder) and tight end Daniel Fells (undisclosed) are also listed on the PUP list.

Vollmer has been bothered by chronic back issues for more than a year and Mankins had reconstructive knee surgery after last season.

Pryor ended last season on injured reserve after suffered a season-ending injury in September.

Ballard, claimed off waivers from the Giants in May, is recovering from torn knee ligaments. He was injured in the Super Bowl XLII victory over New England and isn't expected to play this season.
